Just bought a cheapy GTi, very nice condition and history.
Unfortunately it's got one of those KN 57i type filter kits fitted. Feels very hesitant and idles very erratically. Also has a 'Skorpion' exhaust.

Anybody got any ideas how to improve it? Only a cheapy so really don't want to spend more than few pounds on it so proper setup and rolling road not really an option.

Thanks.

Service it first to illiminate anything minor causing the problems.

I'd join one of the VW forums then and ask if anyone wants to swap your noisey bits for standard items.

Hi there, just thought but get someone to have a look at your air mass thingy,,, same problems on my last two golfs but did the trick. Seems to be a regular problem with golfs.

Is it a mark 3?

If so sounds like throttle body, if that is what Pete meant. 5 minute job to fix.

Undo jubilee clip, pull off plastic hose. Spray brake cleaner in throttle body, wipe off and give it a good clean. Redo the clip and you're away!

Did it on my 1997 8 valve Gti.

It's an earlt model which has a different injection system i believe? Flappy paddle sensor in pipe from where airbox should be. With regard to throttle body, would this need completely removing to clean?

I don't know about different engine versions.

You don't have to remove the throttle body to get at the affected area, just the pipe.
