Ok, my little toy has arrived but the wireless on my ADSL router has packed up so need to buy a new one. Not bought one for years so any ideas out there as to the best one to buy? Usage is simple home use, wired and wireless for several laptops and my XBox 360 if it makes a difference? Current (busted) one is Netgear DG something or other!

Cheers

I'll probably but shot down in flames for suggesting buying anything at PC world but at the price I'd recommend:

That item is for DSL, not ADSL.

My bad didn't read the question fully.

Quick search comes up with this though £30 more expensive (though is bundled with a wireless USB stick)

ADSL is a flavour of DSL. I'd be amazed if a DSL product sold at PC World did not work on any UK (A)DSL line. They are all ADSL 2+ capable these days...

In other words, when shopping at PC World, use the terms ADSL and DSL interchangeably...

I was actually looking at this one, think I may take the plunge and give it a go.

To my knowledge a DSL Cable router and an ADSL Modem Router are not interchangeable.

If you are happy downloading drivers, there are usually loads of recon Netgear routers and receivers on fleabay with 1/3 to 1/2 off the usual price.

I got a replacement WNR834B for about £45 delivered (ebuyer sell them for £77) smile

But Cable is not DSL AFAIK. AIUI, DSL is the parent category of Digital Subscriber Line. Within this, you have SDSL (synchronous) where upload and download speeds are equal; and ADSL (asynchronous) where upload speeds are lower.

In this particular case, it's not what the OP is after. The WGB111BDL is a bundle of the WGR614 wireless router and a USB WLAN adapter. The router in this case is for use with an ethernet cable or ADSL modem.

I use a DrayTek Vigor 2800. It also acts as a VPN terminator so you can VPN into your setup at home. A little more expensive but has a far more flexible config than any of the Netgear or Belkin routers I've used.

DSL is not Cable. To simplify things, there are two otions:

1. You have ADSL (ie: your Internet is delivered via your telephone line). In this case you need a (A)DSL Router (ie: a router with an (A)DSL modem built in).

2. You have Cable Internet. In this case you need a plain wireless router to hang off the back of your Cable modem. No DSL malarkey required.
