Hi all,

I've just been spec'ing up a new laptop for the gf after her HD imploded last night. Looking at Dell Vostro with a budget of around £400. Basic spec is 15.4" screen, 2GB ram, 120GD HD, DVD RW.

I've got a Vostro 1000 with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Mobile Technolgy TK57 which is apparently 1.9GHz for £370.20 verses a Vostro 1500 with an Intel Core 2 Duo T5470 1.6GHz for £388.93 (free shipping today on that). Also for £435.93 on the same Vostro 1500 I could have the Intel T7250 2.0GHz chip, but my gf is a bit tight so might not want to spring the extra few quid.

So really the question is AMD or Intel? I've never had anything with AMD before but I guess they must work, is the Athlon a dual core type thing as well? Which would give better performance for her.

Also I guess, what's the difference between the Vostro 1000 and 1500? I'm not seeing much in the way of comparison on the Dell web site, but working on the more expensive = better economics theory, the 1500 is the way to go wink

Cheers,
Rob

AMD processor's tend to have better idle running stats (the processor will slow down when not in use, creates less heat, battery last longer, it's all good smile) and will run slower and cooler when you're just bumming around on the net or whatever. And yes, the Athlon is a dual-core as well. I personally like AMD stuff, but out of the two there is not a lot to swing it either way. The Intel stuff is generally very good at the moment, so neither would be a bad choice. If it's just going to be used for word-processing and net use, the T7250 upgrade will just be a waste smile
Not sure on the 1000 vs 1500 Vostro though. smile

Ta Luke, that sounds quite nifty. Definitely more power than she needs, she is/was coping fine with the 1.4MHz Celeron, so anything faster with more cores should be more than capable.

She's thrown a third alternative to the Vostros in to the mix now. She took her comatose laptop in to our local shop - the guy thinks he'll be able to get the disk running again, hopefully long enough to recover her data - and he reckons he could build something to her specs for the same budget. I'll have to see the actual spec he comes up with first but I do like the idea of having local backup for when she inevitably drops it wink

Cheers,
Rob

Knowing her she'd just let her whole arm! fall off! wink

And of course, after having me waste a lot of my very valuable time biggrin, she's decided she's just going to get her old one repaired. New 80GB disk and bump the ram up to 512MB. Hopefully the repair blokey is going to be able to recover her data, he was on about freezing the bust drive over night - hmmm! Anyway, fair play to him, he pretty much talked her into go the repair route for about £150 and did himself out of selling a new system for £400.

Cheers,
Rob
