bmw 318 coupe reving problem
Discussion
hi wondering if anyone could shed any light to this problem. A girl from work has 318 its five years old fully serviced, but recently when the car is stationary the revs are jumping from 1000rpm to 2000 rpm in a pulsing movement and it sounds rough as old arses, what is the most likely problem?
also how often should a timing belt be changed on a bmw?

As said in one of the other threads, these cars are chain driven so no belt to change. Dont know about the idle problem, sorry.
Incidentally does anyone know why certain companies choose to use cam belts, bearing in mind the consequences if it goes pop? Is it just cost or some other reason?

Cambelts are used to reduce weight and noise also. Whilst many manufacturers have made millions from belt failures, many now have 100,000m service intervals but you almost always need to replace tensioners and pulleys also.
As far as that idle problem is concerned, there is most likely an air leak from around the inlet manifold. Check the breather valve and hoses or get a can of carb cleaner, spray around the inlet manifold and when it finds the leak, the engine will stutter.
Other than that, it could be airflow meter.
