Check the condition of the air filter as if this is dirty it may negate all the other work.

Does it whistle from the turbo in the normal way ?
Check the EGR is not stuck , and if really serious pull of the air hose and check that your
intake is not sooted up

Is it still performing OK, i.e. giving you full juice,
EGR seems to be a candidate out with the MAF that the diagnostics don't pick up on. (type in EGR or N75 into google...) the other i have found out is the vanes in the turbo getting sooted up and not operating properly, but this would give you a significant drop in performance.

Yes with the vanes ,
Stop the engine and let it cool , find the vac pipe that goes to the turbo discconect and then
put one hand one turbo and find the little actuator , suck like hell on the pipe and the acuatator should move approx 3/4 ( three quat ) of an inch if you cannot make it move ....
I used a bit of 13mm copper pope 1mter long , cut a slot in one end 4mm wide by 10mm deep put this on the actuator arm that goes into the turbo and wiggle . After a few seconds there will be a graunching sound as the carbon soot gives up . Try sucking again and it will start to move maybe 1/8 or 1/4 of and inch repeat until its free .
VAG new TDI's like to have a mini italian tune up every few months to get rid of the all the black stuff , not to mad 4,000 rpm for 30 seconds will blow out most junk

One other little silly
The VAG PD's re-cycle gasses like crazy this can lead to a bunged up intercooler .
I do mine once a year.

Pull off the top hose going down to the cooler .
Put in 1/2 pint of gunk or similar
Leave it overnight
Take of bottom connector to intercooler and make sure you have a bucket handy
The stuff that comes out is uggghhhhh !
CRITICAL ...
Remove every trace of fluid from the cooler and the bottom pipe , I stuff a hairdrier down the pipe for 20 minutes , had really good results from this , no more smoke , faster pickup etc etc
