After totally destroying my one piece waterproofs last year by testing the crash bungs on the SV I need new ones for this years touring, on the really practical Speed triple 1050.
Any tips on good/bad waterproofs? I'l probably go for two piece this time for less hassle (provided they keep the rain out), and packing away small is quite important due to having very limited space.

Sorry to deviate but can you put a top box on a Speed/Street Triple or is there no pannier provision whatsoever? Would put me off a bit if this is the case...

The speed triple is pretty poor for luggage, I have no idea about top boxes but the pillion seat is small and there are no bungee points.
The exhausts would also cremate any throwover panniers.
I'm using a Kreiga tailpack that attaches to the seat, but it only fits sideways, and it's only 20 litres so touring may be slightly smelly.

Top bike otherwise though.....

For recommendation on waterproofs, check out here:

If luggage space is an issue, check these out:

I got one of these when I bought the bike and I'm actually pretty impressed.

I've owned a Speed Triple, great bikes and will definately have another one day.

If you're going to be a doing a lot of touring, is it worth swopping those high level cans for the Arrow or similar? I know those high level cans look good, but they are a total pain if you're trying to get stuff strapped to the bike!

Kriega tailpacks or rucksacks is what I had to do, and I'm afraid I didn't manage to come up with a better solution.

As far as the waterproofs I use, I've got a Spada one piece suit that is perfectly fine. I've ridden through thunderstorms and all sorts in that suit and I've always been dry at the end. Not breathable though, so it does get a bit sticky in humid cities, etc.

Enjoy your trumpet!

I've seen a 1050 wih the low level arrow system and throwovers, so that would allow more options. I like the high level cans though, and will just carry less stuff. I don't like tank bags either, so I've limited my options for luggage quite badly!

Good post with the ride triangles, I'd forgotten about them!

Ventura lggage system, very good stuff.

Have used it very successfully on the Mille, Tuono and now the Multistrada.

I'd personally be inclined to go one piece myself. I bought some Belstaff (!) waterproofs about 8 yrs ago. Although hardly used they are easy peazy to put on over boots etc. One big zip & furry type collar lining. They kept me dry & cozy when I last used them, fold into their own bum bag thing & have yellow pattern on for visibility (which happens to match jacket, boots gloves etc.!) Trouble is I haven't seen them for sale lately.

Belstaff went down the pan about 4 years ago when Phoenix lost the distribution rights from the owners of the Belstaff name.
There has been an attempt to re-introduce the Belstaff brand in the past few years, but frankly, the new stuff is cak.

Best waterproof jacket I ever owned was a Belstaff Explorer which did 5 years of heavy, everyday use without a murmer before it started to give up (tags off zips, weeping at the sleeves etc).
This was just as the last of the stock was being massively discounted, and I could have bought a new jacket exactly the same for £100 but thought I would try something different instead.
Berk; I should have had the Explorer again. Nothing since has ever come close.

I still trawl ebay looking for a "hardly used," but the only one that keeps coming up is a Small from CJ Ball Suzuki; an absolute bargain at £90 but it won't fit my "generous" proportions.

So, how annoying.

After my last post on this thread, I had a quick browse on ebay and found just what I was looking for; a lightly used Explorer jacket.
Start price 99p, buy it now £75, but £15 postage (bit steep...).

Thought to myself, "I'll watch this and maybe get a bargain at the end of the auction."

He who hesitates...

Checked it again just now and some beggar has bought it before I could make my mind up!
Wouldn't it be just my luck to be someone off here...
