Hi Guys,

Simple question. I have a weekend toy which has been under used for the last few years and so the mileage on the tyres is very low, a few hundred miles. But the tyres must be 3-4 years old. I plan to use it this summer if it doesnt rain all summer like last year! Should I just change the tyres anyway? Am worried about flat spots and tyres just being old etc Tread is not the issue. Bike has been standing in a garage.

Also any recommendations on tyres?

Thanks!

If it was mine i'd change them, flat spots would be an issue if it has not been sat on paddock stands, plus the tyre would be getting old......I use Pirelli Supercorsa's on my SPS and also ran these on my 748's.....

I have a stand that lifts the rear tyre only, I guess i need them both of the ground. Hmmm I think I am on Pirellis too, I think you are right best to change them, they aren't loads of money and I hate ste tyres! Cheers

the Dunlop 208s have been great on my 600RR, also Michelin 2CTs are a great tyre in my opinion.

just wondering though, how come youve left it sitting for so long?, i know our summers arnt the greatest but theres still a few good days in them.

In short, I used to live out near henley and i would buzz the country roads whenever the sun was out. Now because of work I have moved to central london and I don't know anyone up here who really rides and I don't know loads of nearby decent roads. So ocassionally I ride back to my old spots, but it takes a long time to get back to these places and so the total time on the road is long for when I just want an hours blast and there is always town/motorway time to get to where I want to be.

I haven't even tracked it which is dull! I spend all my track action in my car which is fantastically fast (911 GT2) but the truth is I am probably a better rider than driver! The bike seems slow in comparison but I love its looks and noise, it is a keeper!

ive always liked Ducatis although ive never gone out and bought one, i agree the GT2 is a fantasticly fast car and im sure you enjoy driving it too, its not so bad for me in regards to riding roads becaus i live in Surrey, the roads around Box hill etc are good fun as well as the way down to the coast, there are some nice dual carrigeways around Horsham too, you should try and check them out in the summer only 20 mins or so down the A3 then another 10 to Box Hill smile

The tyres should be fine, just enjoy them, highly unlikely you'll reach the limits for grip, if you want riding mates try Visordown or Ducatisti loads of people on there, also even though its had light use, if you haven't recently I'd get the belts changed, they are known to go "ping" if left to sit as the develop tight spots ...

As for getting out on it .... depending where in Central London you are head in a diferent direction, some good roads to the SE, out through Blackwall Tunnel, etc, and if you want to track it, then always people on Ducatisti up to something smile

oh, and as for a tyre recomendation .. Pirelli Diablo Corse, goodfor everything, trackdays, road, wet, dry .... make sure you get a 180 rear and 70 profle front, helps with the turn in ....

Anything else, just shout, I'm SE London smile

The worst thing to degrade a standing tyre is direct sunlight for long periods of time, the UV rays degenerate the tyre, like bleaching paint on older red cars i spose! Inspect for cracks, unlikely though, i'd also say to check the pressures! smile

If you are swithering about changing the tyres, think about the maths of it.

New set of tyres = £200 maximum (going the whole ride-in-ride out route).

If the originals have been on for four years, that's only £50 per year (3 tanks of gas).

Should you drop the bike for any tyre related mishap on the old ones, you'll be kicking yourself at the cost...

All good advise and appreciated, thanks guys.

I had the belts done ready for last summer.....last summer never arrived. I may just pop the bike in for a check over ready for this summer!

Thanks for that!

I am in West London, edge of Kensington. I used some guy called Dave in Wandsworth (I think) last year...he was good! A specialist.
