This could be opening a can of worms....

I am looking to buy a ps3, mainly for the use of the blu ray player. I am not a gamer, though inevitably I may want to play a bit and need wirless controllers for that as the device will not be in the same room as the TV.
Are there different ps3 options available?
Are there particularly well known suppliers of cheap kit?
Also looking to buy a Wi for a bit of fun...any advice there?

many thanks in anticipation..

regards
simon

Get a Wii, they're cracking fun! thumbup
If you're wanting the PS3 primarily for a Blue-ray player, unless you want to buy the movies now, I wouldn't bother.
Give it a few months until the prices of proper players and the discs drop a bit. smile

You do know it's only the controllers that are wireless, not the TV signal? This needs a (preferably HDMI) cable. confused

The Blu-Ray player is still the best on the market at the moment, if for no other reason than the fact that it is upgradeable via regular firmware updates (how many people have non-ps3 bluray players that can handle Blu-Ray Live?).

In the UK, you're currently limited to the 40gb model, which comes in at around £280 with no games (IIRC).

The controllers are Bluetooth (ie wireless), so will work from a different room fine. Like the previous poster, I assume your PS3 will be wired to the TV via HDMI...

I got one a little while back after wondering for some time if it was really any good as a bluray player.

It's been superb, really pleased and even my wife is too.

As you say, I'm not really into games that much but have got quite into a couple of them biggrin

Got a wii also, that is very good fun but not much cop as a film player.

Is there a particular reason that it wont be in the same room as the TV?

Two reasons, firstly the reception on the controllers wont be that good. Secondly, if you are wanting to connect by HDMI with a long cable run, the cheaper cables don't cut the mustard. Therefore, you may find that to get a 1080p cable is going to cost you upwards of £100.

Whether there is a noticeable difference in quality in cables over longer distance I shall let Plotloss comment as he has more experience of installations. Through my own testing, at short distances on 2 metre cables in a blind test I could not tell the difference between a £10 cable and a £100 HDMI cable.

Interestingly, the Wii is the console I play the least out of the 360, PS3 and Wii...

though the PS3 gets used more as a BluRay than a console.

Thanks to all!
The reason the player will be in a seperate room is that all my equipment is there..amps, dvd, sky, turntable(!),cd server, laserdisc(!) etc. No issue with cable runs, HDMI to amp and amp on to TV and projector.
I shall go any buy a ps3 and a wii..
