This car is advertised as a 1.8 and £3999 in the Formby MIDWEEK VISITOR

so i phone up and ask which version of 1.8 is it ? Ah, well it's not it's a 1.6. Fair enough but it'll need to be cheaper then (not a lot just a few 100 quid)

Actually sir it's £4999 as on the website.

Actually I've been watching it in the paper for 5 weeks and The price has gone down every week, so no I don't believe you've made a mistake on the price.

My actually responce : Click Burrrr

A few years back when I bought my Golf V5 I had been searching for a few weeks and came across one advertised by a dealer on their website for £10499. A bit overpriced but certainly negotiable so I call them, yes its still on sale. By the time I get there the price has jumped to £10999. Naughty naughty. cheeky salesman said he could discount it down to £10499 but no lower. So I just ignored him and started negotiating down from the originally advertised price, eventually drove it away for £9499 :-)

I'm taking my time on this purchase (procrastinating perhaps), I bet that next week about Thursday I'll phone him.

The price of the car is irrelevant.

Make him an offer and say take it or leave it.

I have walked away from car dealerships twice before and both times got a call later that day to renegotiate.

Same here, make an offer. Two occasions stand out.

First, time I made an offer, the dealer rang me a few days later to take up the offer, I managed to haggle the price down even further!!

Second time, I made the offer and offered to hand over the dosh there and then. They started to haggle, but soon accepted once I got up and headed for the door.

They are just invitations to treat.

It's not going to get me through the door. I'm not going to drive to Croxteth if they are talking ballocks on the phone.

Interestingly after my telephone discussion about the car last Thursday, they've put the same advert in th Formby Champion this week

MGTF 1.8 Blue 53 Reg 38K miles £3999.

Would I be interested in a 1.6? Maybe.
would it need to be cheaper than the more powerful and therefor more desirable 1.8 ? YES

If I go and make an offer of £3200 and leave my telephone number, do you think they'd call me back ? No IDEA

Is it worth a try ? NO Idea.

I come up with £3200 by the following calculations.

If I go to look at a car advertised at £4K, I'm expecting to be able to haggle down to £3650. If it turns out the car is a lesser version, I'd be wanting to knock 15% off, so £3200 is actually a good deal for the dealer.

I'm really looking for an MX5 and I'm really in no rush. I hate to say this but I really like the colour, and I know I should steer clear of anything with such a bad reputation.

So shall I ?

Apart from the obvious - walking away whilst the dealer chases you, are there any other tips. Should I give them my phone number or not?

Walk away.

Look at the title of your thread.

If the description of a fundamental point is wrong, and remains wrong even after you've challenged them, what else might be wrong?

If the car were your first choice marque and model, and the above applied, I would still suggest that you walked (unless you received a watertight warranty - which today is hard to ensure).

So, from my perspective it is a no-brainer. Walk. The only traders I'd give my number to are those able to provide me my first choice car.

Good luck.

Would completely agree with the above, walk.

The dealer is possibly engaging in a behaviour which would not endear him to me as a person with which I would like to do business. Imagine you do a deal and then something goes wrong a week later. Are they going to have a sudden fit of ethical behaviour over that when they clearly cannot get there act togeher with a potential customer.

Nah, walk.

The only question I would have is to whether to spend time dobbing them in with Trading Standards in case there is a record of some previous or TS take a dim view of this. I wouldn't know whether this is something TS would be interested in or not but I seem to recall that most of the complaints are vehicle related.

Having had a nightmare time with the dealer when I bought my ZS, I'd say walk away.

They couldn't get themselves sorted out when i was a potential customer and were even less interested when it overheated on the way home from picking it up.
I had to threaten them with TS to get the repairs on warranty that it needed.

After 2 more weeks in the Champion advertised now as a 1.8 at 4999, it's now advertised as a 1.6 at 4275.

Roll on another 4 weeks and they'll be advertising it at £3750 ?

They are a little stupid I fear.

My wife has decided that we are to keep our money locked up in some underperforming isa instead.

I'd like to hear how you're framing the argument that a 4 grand 1.6 litre car that won't sell to anyone else represents a better idea! She sounds like the brains of the outfit, lol.
