Hello

Have just bought a more powerful pc and always fancied giving it a go so time to tinkering for fun at home.

No training in music or instruments and don't have the time to start so don't want any hardware and will be all MP3.

Can anyone give me the names of the best packages used by professionals?

Fruityloops is a fantastic piece of software for writing your own music, especially if you're just starting out or have no prior musical training. It's reasonably priced and, last time I checked, comes with lifetime updates.

Reason is another package which is very powerful and very professional, but is a bit of a b*tch to use. I'd recommend this one once you start to get better at writing stuff and want a more polished finish/sound to your tracks. It is a bit pricey though.

I'd also recommend getting your paws on a waveform editor; I have a package from Adobe that's fantastic but I can't remember the name of it right now for the life of me! This will allow you to manipulate vocal tracks, or rip up full tracks for re-mixing etc.
