........do these things work in the UK? ive read that they are prone to false alarms and dont always pick up the lasers, but the model im interested is a BEL 980 International from the US of course.

Does the international bit mean its gonna work or would i be wasting my cash????

Thanks for any help

Bel detectors are generally highly rated. I'm not sure about the 980 but the 990i got a glowing review at UK Speedtraps (www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk).

You'll always get false alerts if X band and certain K bands are active on the detector. The only effective defence against laser is a "remote garage door opening device " such as the Snooper SLD 920.

Don't buy a Cobra. I bought an ESD 6100 in the States and, as far as the UK is concerned, it's not very good

Hi, thanks for the reply, i was looking at a test here www.beldirect.co.uk/AutoExpress.htm and the 980 came out on top. Wouldnt mind getting my hands on one as they are less than half the price from the US.

Just need to find out if they work on the same frequency as over here first!

Try a Valantine One. £550 over here. Buy in the US for £250. Then go to their website and it show's you how to turn on and off the X band and Ku Ka bands.

I know the Valentine one is the mother of al radar detectors, but after reading a few reviews the 980 it aint that far behind and their only £150 from auction sites brand new (im a student). I'm sure i've read that you can turn on and off different bands on it, so does that mean it'll work fine over here?

Thanks

Craig

Yeah. If you can turn off the X band (not used in Europe) and turn on the Ku band it will work just fine. That's the only difference between UK and US ones. (maybe packaging etc as well)
