Hi all,

Just speccing up Mrs E's next company car and she fancies a TT. At the moment she can afford the 2.0 TFSi DSG coupe in a metallic within her lease limit.

I know that in May it was announced that the new 158bhp 1.8T will be available at some point, but since then radio silence.

Does anyone have any information on availability, specs etc, or thoughts about the new 1.8T engine - it seems to be pretty widely praised, from what I have read, and if she switched to this model she'd get a better spec than in the 2.0.

Welcome your thoughts,

Thanks

New 1.8TFSI is a bit flat. Very much so compared with 2.0TFSI. New Diesel versions probably faster.

My advise Dont get DSG, save a shed load on that, to pay for all the other spec options She requires.

Am Assuming Mrs E will be ok with a manual.

Thanks TT - Mrs E chooses not to change gears herself, however, so an autobox it must be - oh and she won't sit on anything other than cowhide, and simply must have a metallic, oh and wouldn't it be nice to have... I'm sure you get the picture (and I have to find this mythical car within her lease limit!)

I'm assuming that you've sampled the 1.8 in the new A4, and the early reviews were suggesting it was more lively in a much lighter car - what do you reckon?

Have tried it in A4, A5 and A3. I genuinely think the Diesel will be faster, but they sound horrible in the TT, sporty car with Diesel power just not a Good look. The 1.8TFSI has quite a sporty note to it by comparison.

I'm assuming you know for a fact that engine is going to be available in the TT, because I didnt know anything about it. But often the first time we know about it is when we PDI one and its like, oh they doing that engine in these now.

The 1.8TFSI engine is not bad by any means, (a few have blown up though, oil pump problems) It just doesn't have any top end power. You get a good pull of torque from right down low and think wow thats smooth, it will really get going in a minute, but the top end rush you are expecting never happens its just the same smooth pull of torque all the time and its all over by 5000-5250rpm, you can rev it right out to 6000+ if you want, be theres more power in the next gear. If Mrs E isnt the type to race people off the lights, could be a winner for you.

Compare with the 2.0TDI, you get a bigger rush of torque with the TDI not quite as smooth and it dies off that bit sooner 4000-4250rpm, the actual rate of acceleration, amount of being pushed back into your seat etc. is much more with the TDI than the 1.8TFSI, so it feels faster.

I've driven cars that use all three of these engines. If your gonna do mega miles go for the TDI, if not stick with the 2.0TFSI and either way stay away from the 1.8TFSI, it's not bad as such, just not as good as the other too.

A good decision too. I can't comment on the MkII TT's with those engines (I have a MkI myself) but my missus has a 2.0T in her A3 and the difference between that and the 1.8T we had as a courtesy car was like night and day. The difference in power was very very noticeable but then again it is 20% down with probably only a little weight difference.

The 2.0T is a very nice engine indeed and even makes a decent noise.....well, compared to the old 1.8T anyway.

Drove a 2.0 demo last nigh and very impressed indeed. Best news is that we've found a leasing co that will do DSG, metallic and leather. I'm now a hero at home (some chance!)
