Lupo 1.4 Emissions warning light
Discussion
Hi all. Got a call from my mother last night to say that an emmisions warning light had come on on her Lupo. Its a 1.4 16v (75bhp model). Knowing that she needs to drive it to France in the next few days, I suggested that she call her rescue service rather than risking it. Car apparently seems otherwise fine. Needless to say, the light had dissappeared by the time the Rescue service arrived and no fault would show on their computer.
So any ideas what next? I assume if she takes it to a VW garage, the fault will not show up there either.

Lambda sensor wiring... almost guaranteed..
Used to have exactly the same re-occurring fault on a Seat Arosa with much the same engine.. I ended up buying a VAG scan tool and repeatedly resetting the error myself after getting a price for replacement from SEAT and nearly having a heart attack !
You'll find that fuel economy and part throttle drivability is compromised when the light is on as the ECU will revert to open loop
ETA: Had she just driven through a puddle when it came on?
Pop the bonnet, have a look at the downpipe and you'll see the Lambda sensor poking out of the passenger side, look at the lovely path that all of the road detritus and water has to get to that lovely hot exhaust and sensor..

May be a good idea to take out the MAF sensor and give it a clean with some aerosol solvent cleaner (the kind that evaporates) Wont do it any harm.
Good luck finding it. These don't have a MAF, and work off throttle angle and pre-programmed air mass calculations. It's likely to be the EGR valve and/or the throttle body full of oil. Hour or so labour at your local friendly VW/SKoda/Seat dealer. Make sure they recalibrate the throttle after they put it back on too.
Cheers gents. Unfortunately the car is 200 miles away from me so there is a limit to what I can do. Sod's law, the light hasn't come on since but she popped down to a dealership anyway and got it checked over. Didn't throw up any faults but the technicians advice was not to be overly concerned about it. I don't think there is much that can be done until the light comes back on but once it does I'll try some of the suggestions. Cheers again chaps.
