Want a macbook, better to wait?
Discussion
I'm after a macbook, but rumours are that a new, even shiner version will be out next month, do apple lower the cost of the current macbooks to make way for the new ones??
What features have been rumoured for the new version and is it worth holding out??
This will be my first mac, and I think Ive turned to the dark side, having been a PC man all these years, but the iPhone and my iPod have done loads to persuade me to take the jump.
That and I couldn't bring myself to use the horror known as 'vista' (shudder)

Apple do not lower the prices of the existing ones to clear inventory before the new ones. The ramp down production trying to reach the point where there are none to sell exactly as the new ones become available. Any left overs are sold as refurbs (despite being new) via the refurb store after the new ones launch.

Both the Macbook and Macbook pro are going to replaced very soon.
A week or so before the release you should start seeing a lot of the current models appear on the apple refurb store for a good discount.
Hmm, better to be patient then?A week or so before the release you should start seeing a lot of the current models appear on the apple refurb store for a good discount.
No problem, I've waited this long.
Anyone have any idea what new features will be added?? (other than reduced cost to manufacture )
Yes, the rumour sites say new ones are out next month. But then the rumour sites tend to pull stuff out of their back sides and post it as 'News'. They also tend to predict the predictable. Nearly all the mac sites are somewhat notorious for it now. There could be a new one out next month, or there may not. On the other hand, does the current range do what you need of it now? I'll bet it does, and the chances of upgraded ones being any cheaper are slim.
P,
P,
I'd expect more like late Oct or early Nov, which is when previous Macbook updates have happened. It's after the graduation, off-to-uni, back-to-school sales have tailed off and before Thanksgiving/Christmas.
But as ever, if you need a computer right now then it would be stupid to wait for up to 3 months just to have the newest, shiniest thing when you could have got 3 months of useful work out of it.

PJR makes a good point, although new portables seems certain within weeks. PJR also forgot to mention that with pent up demand for MacBooks, and lack of availability of old machines (Apple are pretty good at clearing the warehouse early), stocks of new machines could be very patchy. So waiting for September may turn out to mean receive in late October.
I'd still wait. A point missed by many in Apple's recent financial results was a warning that something would appear in September that would have a significant impact on figures for the final calendar quarter. The nature of the warning suggests that it isn't just new laptops, and that it's big, even by Apple standards.
It may not be true. It may be something beyond traditional computers (iPhone nano, a new direction for AppleTV, or something in the AppleStore). It might only be for the USA for 2008. Lets be honest, with that sort of hype it's always ging to be a letdown. But if Apple see it as that important, I'd wait & see anyway.

I'm not normally one to say wait, especially as in the last few years MacBook/MacBook Pro upgrades have been mostly spec updates, but in this case certainly the Pro is due a redesign and all the rumour sites are glee with speculation.
It does feel right for a MBP update, and probably a MB one too. I'd wait until the Autumn, unless you need it right now, in which case I'd say it depends on how much a new version would bother you versus how much you need it.

The new MacBooks are likely to be aluminium cased.

MacRumors (sic) is probably the most reliable of the rumour sites.

The power connector on my old G4 Powerbook is even beginning to irritate my other half, so it's scheduled to take on backup/AV duties soon...
But I'm holding out in the hope of something like the Air with a smaller form factor. I'm sure they're going to do something interesting in the laptop space with all the excitement around various different types from other brands, all tripping over themselves to find the right formula. I'm not sure the Air quite hits the spot (wonder what sales have been like), but I reckon Air MkII will.
Was hoping that the Tosh R500 would make a decent Hackintosh candidate, but reviews on performance haven't been that favourable.
I also suspect Apple might plump for adding BluRay drives to a couple of product lines....

I'm in no great rush to buy one TBH, the reason I'm after one is that my work offer 2 year interest free computer loans (pre-tax) and the limitations of a desktop in the spare room is starting to annoy me.
It would be nice to have a laptop in the house, but I couldn't bring myself to use vista, its a bloody nightmare!
So a macbook is on the cards, I was thinking (with the current range) of getting the mid level (white) macbook with memory and HDD upgrade, but the allure of the black one is drawing me closer, so it comes to which do I sacrifice? Performance or looks?
I'm not really a heavy user, browsing the net, downloading, and itunes will probably be all its used for (unless I find some new toys in OSX)

Dont get your RAM upgrade from Apple. . . Goto Crucial or someone similar lots cheaper
How much cheaper? would apple invalidate the warranty if I added my own memory, or are they not as bad as that?I could get a nice big 1TB external HDD with the change I saved from getting the white one
