I've been dithering about what to go for next for some time. In May I had half an eye on the 645i. It seemed you needed to spend £28k for a high-spec early model. I've just looked again and now there seem to be loads of AUC cars for £23k. I know the market is bad, but another £5k drop in less than 3 months??

Anyone else noticed this?

i read in the press recently that some dealers wouldnt even take a 645 in part ex as they simply couldnt sell them

they would give a bid on a 630 but even this was very low

Yep, it's pretty brutal for the residuals, mine is due up in December and the dealer will no doubt be crying when I turn up to hand it back. What's he going to do with it, a 4 year old car with a trade value of probably 12k. No doubt it will be in the auction soon after, shame, it has been a great car.

Why is this? They're not mega-heavy on fuel are they? And the VED is not going to be worse than any other top band car.

Is the trade price really that low?

I don't know how much of this is as a result of "self fulfilling prophecy". I was looking at these earlier this year when they were high £20s but seeing the prices drop as they have, I wonder how safe my money would be. If everyone else is seeing the same thing - who is going to buy.

I think I'm going to hang on until the autumn as I feel there is still some major drops to come as winter begins to bite and the next glut of ex company cars come on the market following the reg number change.

I can see the 4 figure 6 Series on the horizon.

I think four-figure 6's is a little optimistic (unless it takes five years to reach the horizon). I'm sure you'll be able to dig up a monster-miler at the auctions sub-£10k in a couple of years, but in terms of the Main Stealer prices it's a long way from £23k to £10k for a car that started at £55k.

I think the problem is oversupply in that part of the used market. In times of uncertainty people are naturally less given to making large financial committments, so there's been a reduction in buyers at that level which has coincided with a glut of premium sports cars, cabriolets and grand tourers hitting the used market. As is the case in boom times, in the last few years the manufacturers have been rattling out niche models as fast as they can. Now they're hitting the used market, the good times have passed and there's less cash around (or at least so people fear) for buyers to indulge themselves. Supply exceeds demand = used bargains to be had.

Yes, I'd welcome input on this too. Thanks.

Agree.

But if I can buy an AUC car for £23k and sell it for £10k in three years, I'd be quite happy.

Obviously VED is there at the top, mpg on the 645 appears to be around 20 and on the 630 about 30. Not unreasonable in my opinion. I don't think servicing costs are bad unless you have a major problem. Rear tyres can be a bit of a pain at £300 each.

I think that this is beyond my pockets though. £23K-£10K in 3 years is not what I want to stomach. Especially when the £23-£10K drop is more like 12-18 months with the way things are going. This is before the full force of VED comes into force!

Has anyone noticed that dealers are getting quite realistic in their asking prices whereas most private sellers are hoping to hold out for the high prices.

What I really dont understand is why VED is affecting these cars so much.

Surely to the sort of person who buys a £20-£50k 4.4 litre Coupe the fact its road tax is going up by 200 quid a year should be a complete non issue, right?

It's certainly not bothered me (Well, it has, I'm annoyed about it and think it's unjust but I'm not selling my car or leaving on beans as a result) and I'm nowhere near as well off as the typical buyers of these cars.

Why is a £200 rise such a big deal? It wont even buy a tyre for a 645Ci.

I've had mine a couple of months now and love it.

My MPG is s**t though, on a recent motorway journey could only average 18mpg, but I was not hanging around wink. Around some country lanes got it down to 8mpg.

The MPG is not an issue with me though as I knew what I was letting myself in for.

I've got larger Alpina wheels on mine and that makes some journeys a bit hard, but again I'm happy to put up with that. As for tyre costs I got the tyre insurance from my BMW dealer and I know that is going to be really handy.

Great car, great presence and I love it.

Modrately is the keyword there. I reckon it is around 20mpg, but not when I drive it. I like listen to the engine when I drop a gear far to much.

If you are getting 18 on the motorway you must be either gunning it or there is something wrong with it!

Nothing wrong with it. Like I said I was not hanging around.

My other half gets more mpg urban than I have been on the motorway.

I only get to drive it every other week due to working away and I find myself getting carried away a lot.

AUC cars about £23k.

Private/small dealer about £19k.

Is the extra £4k worth it?
