A family member has acquired a car (Polo V 1999/2000) with a digital dash which it nows turns out may have been clocked from 130 to 60K. How easy is this to do and are there any telltale signs it has happened - like the numbers not lining up on mechanical speedos?
Does anyone know how the law stands if the clocking can be proved - does pleading innocence on the part of the seller hold water - I'm not sure of the details but it's a private sale and the documentation with the old mileage on is a couple of years old so they previous owner may also have been duped.
Thanks

Im no expert on the subject but im fairly sure that changing the mileage display on a car is NOT illegal.

Yes, funny that when I had my first car with digital odometer, one of the claims was that they are harder (or impossible) to 'clock' whereas, in reality they are much easier than taking mechanical speedos apart and winding little wheels round. rolleyes

There are any number of 'specialists' offering 'mileage correction services' and with the right software, lead and a laptop you can do your own. As for the legality, I believe that it is not illegal to change the mileage on your own car but would be illegal to then sell on without advising the buyer that it had been done, presumably it is fraud.

It's not illegal to change the mileage as you can correct it if a new speedo is fitted etc.

It is howver illegal to misrepresent the mileage while selling a vehicle

Isnt it more that its illegal to purposely mislead someone as to the correct mileage? The actual act of 'clocking' a car is ok?

Fraud perhaps?

It is easy enough to pull the dash pod/clocks out and change from another car ...

Well, by the time you've coded the pod to the car you might as well just have the mileage set at the correct reading.

Do an HPI report on the car and request an NMR (National Mileage Register) investigation - this will give you info on mileage at specific dates (MOT, change of ownership, main dealer service, HPI check etc.).
