Hello,

Quick question for you VR6 owners or folk in the know.

Sometimes the car will start on the first turn and catch in a second, other times you will need to keep the key turned, the strater will run and it may take 3 or 4 seconds to ctach and will gradually burst into life, almost a hesitation upon starting.

What is the likely problem?

I was thinking spark plugs as maybe a spark wasn't that forthcoming but then also thought it could be a fuelling issue?

Many Thanks

Dr G

Friend of mine had a Dragon Green with an identical sounding fault; traced it back to the fuel pump relay ingaging when it wanted to rather than when you asked it to. Have heard of this on other VRs too.

What VR6? If it is OBD1 have you cleaned the Idle Stabilisation Valve recently?

when it isnt starting is the engine still turning over at a normal speed. sometimes slow cranking like having a slightly flat battery can be caused by the earth from the battery to the gearbox and the wire from the battery to the starter degrading.
if it turns at normal speed but takes a little longer to catch try the cold start valve/extra injector or even leaky injector seals.

Does it make any difference of you are parked at a angle? i once had issues with my golf an it was the fuel accumilator playing up but it was only noticable if i parked facing up a hill.

Don't rule out the ignition switch as a possible cause as well once the other matters have been looked into (especially if it takes a while to 'register' the first turn of the key).
Cheers,
