Took a look at an 840Ci Sport on Sunday with a full service history etc but..

1) The engine sounded distinctly tappety when started
2) There was a "soft" dent on the NSR quarter but very close to a crease
3) The split rims needed a refurb
4) The passenger door, when opened, dropped the glass as you would expect but the glass appeared to be out of alignment, almost as if it was dropping back in towards the car; there was a mark to show where it was making contact when dropped

This car was on 85k and was up for 7k although I suspect some movement would be available but the question is; looking at the above and assuming 1) is not indicating impending catastrophic failure would I be right in thinking that rectifying the other little points could easily cost 1k to 1.5k (Split rims refurb along could account 800 - 1k).

Is this a walkaway job because there will be another out there somewhere at say 8k with less miles and none of the nit picks above?

What is the recent history of the car, ie last 8-10,000 miles. Who has been looking after it and what money has been thrown at it?

If the chassis is sound and the interior is OK, I would get my local specialist to go over the engine and suspension / electrics before buying the car.

Recent history is inspection 2 at 77k miles at a main dealer and then an inspection 1 at an independent relatively recently.

I believe I recall that noise on V8 is common and nothing to worry about.
Dent near crease could be difficult.
All the split rims corrode.
Window - dunno I'm afraid.

I think there were two V8s = 4.0 and later 4.4 with Steptronic.

Get your self over here for people who really know their 8s www.8er.org

Keep looking around, drive a couple more cars and the recent paperwork should help you make up your mind.

Thanks all, I joined 8er on Thursday but I'm still waiting for my account to be activated.

Mine makes no tappety noises upon start up, what oil was used on the last inspection, perhaps too thin?

If the dent is free of cracked paint then a dent master type guy can get it out.

The split rims can be expensive to refurb, I chose to do mine myself and it's not a difficult process just pure elbow grease. (Although I could do with going over them again)

Alignment of the glass is out, I've never taken the doorcards off my 8 but I imagine it will be a case of undoing 2 bolts at the bottom of the glass and lining it up properly.

I'd like to think I have a 'very good' example of an 840 sport, if you're nearby you're feel free to have a drive of mine.

Your 8 is very similar to ours - ours is Romantic Red on Champagne Leather - 1999 as well.

Hi GnuBee,

the 8er.org is definitely the place for your answers. There was a local event in Switzerland over the weekend which was attended by a lot of the club organisers so that may explain why you haven't had your account activated so far.

On the car you're looking at right now, with an 8 you're well advised to take someone along that knows the cars as there a number of things you need to check - 8er has some good pre-purchase check lists but I'm not sure if you can access them yet.

On the engine question there were indeed two V8 engines, one is 4.0ltr engine which was the subject of the Nikasil bore-wear issue - you need to check whether this car has that engine and if the engine has been checked or replaced, the other engine is the 4.4ltr with the steptronic gearbox.

What year is the car and do you have the last 7 digits of the VIN number? Aremed with the VIN number there's a lot more info you can find out quickly - I can help you with that.

Cheers

Many thanks,
I suspect I've found a better candidate that's younger in years and miles and has no "nit-picks". I've pushed the VIN through the BMW network and have been able to confirm a full service history and I'm fortunate in knowing a tame BMW specialist who has also obtained the build sheet information.

I'm now a member on 8er.org and have also had a good look round wuffer.net which has some solid information.

Well done, it sounds as though you've found some of the good 8 links, you cn also have a look at Roadfly which has a very good archive of technical stuff, Wuffer is also very useful.
Cheers
