My gosh you've spent £3200 getting a 99 530d through an MOT?!

What exactly was wrong with it? What work have they done?

EFA.

Done up like a kipper.

I got the Porsche MOT'd this week after being told by a Porsche dealer it needed £2k to get through.

I went to the MOT station they use, and it sailed through 100%.

Like a kipper, sorry.

At the very least you'll have been done on the tyres. I always ring BMW for a quote on tyres just for the amusement of being quoted £100 a corner more than everyone else.

Ouch!

I did a similar thing many moons ago, took my motor for an MOT at Halfrauds as it was convenient for work and it was a reduced rate MOT. I had a phone call later in the day to say it required new front discs, new shocks and some other bits and bobs, total about £400 (this was about 15 years ago). I told them where to go because I had checked over the car and knew it was sound (I had even fitted new pads a couple of days before so knew the discs were OK, mildly scored but fine). I took the car to my usual trusted local MOT tester and low and behold it passed with no advisories at all.

Don't be fooled that you can't drive your car on the road if it has no MOT, you can drive it to and from a garage if it is pre-booked in for an MOT test or for repairs as long as the car is in a roadworthy condition (however check whether you are insured or not as some insurance companies can be fussy about it).

From the Directgov website:

"It is generally an offence to use on a public road, a vehicle of testable age that doesn’t have a current test certificate, except when:

* taking it to a test station for a test booked in advance
* bringing it away from a test station after it has failed the test, to a place of repair
* taking it to or bringing it away from a place where, by previous arrangement, repairs are to be made or have been made to fix the problems that caused the vehicle to fail its test

Even in the above circumstances you may still be prosecuted for driving an unroadworthy vehicle if it doesn’t comply with various regulations affecting its construction and use. Also, the insurance may not be valid."

They're not called Stealers for nothing, but at least you should be entitled to as much goddam coffee as you want for the next 5 years!

Well BMW will say you need new tyres when they're still at 4mm, so that's £1000 they've scammed you of.

Their might be 'play' in some of the suspension components that a normal MOT tester would advise you needed doing before the next MOT, but BMW want to be sure you feel that your car is not roadworthy even with the slightest amount of play, so that's another £1000 they've scammed you for.

Add 8 hours of labour at £150/hour and you've got another £1200 to add to that.

I could have given you a name of a friendly (mostly) guru near Colchester - even with him picking it up and delivering it back you'd have spent less - even if you really did need all those parts.

Do they want paying by Western Union by any chance wink

If that's the case it means it'll have needed doing eventualy anyway, so I've hardly been scammed.

At least it'll be handling a bit better.

Soory, i cannot beleive someone is that stupid, that they authorise 3.2k's worth of work without getting a second opinion.

Did the car feel like it was going to collapse around you? did you not think, for one second that they were getting the vaseline ready for you?!
