fwd, but dont expect it to be quick in 2.0 guise... pecking order like this: S2 2.2 turbo, then .020v/2.8V6 are evens, then the 2.6 & 16v close ish.

Although dont forget the coupe is also quattro in the bigger engines, can pick these up for very little at the momnet. i had one for 2.5 years, great cars, very capable and surprisingly practical.

If you ever find yourself near london, give me a shout and I'll take you out in both my 2.0e and my S2 to show you the difference. hehe

They are quite heavy cars and as stated, the 2.0 is not quick.

phone round for insurance might be cheaper than you think.
at 28 i was £330/anum fully comp for my 2.8 80 quattro, then a year later i bought a coupe quattro and the insurance dropped further.

in some cases can be worth joining an owners club to reduce the insurance etc.

unless, your in ireland where it costs the earth

You can get the S2 on a classic (limited milage) policy.

Try http://www.rhclassicinsurance.co.uk/ for insurance

Go on you know you want to.....

A guy at uni, your sort of age, bought my 2.3 Coupe Quattro, so it is possible for you to insure one. He wrote a few months later to say how nice it was!

I agree with what everyone has said. They are heavy and hence, unless you have an S2, not serious contenders in the Traffic Light GP. The 2.2 and 2.3 versions have Audi's wonderful 5 cylinder engine which was made by the same people who did Stonehenge; fantastic sound, unburstable and good for 200,000 miles if cared for.

Although they are a bit slow from standstill, the quattro option helps you keep your average speed up. Don't be afaid of buying a quattro, by the way, I never had problems with the 4WD. Audi's quattro system is bullet proof (the original Torsen system I mean, I don't know how durable the VW derived systems are, used in some newer cars like the TT).

If you shop around and find one that hasn't been bent you'll have no problems with rust either. A great car that might get under your skin.

You'll work up to an S2 and then, when you've acquired wives and kids and things, you'll be wanting an RS2. But that's another story.

5 cylinder 20v is the one to go for if you can find a good one. As others have said, they are not traffic light racers but the 20v has the 170BHP, the 5 cylinder noise and revs so freely - will really start to move as you head above 4k revs. I have had 5 20vs (coupes and Audi 90s) and still miss them - nothing modern has as much character.

It is a nice engine. Id still save up for an S2 though as that has a REALLY nice engine. The 20V N/A lump is smooth and revvy but needs thrashing to feel reasonably quick. The turbo lump has so much low down torque it is superb to drive. Get a 6 speed which has the 230bhp 258lb ft engine.

I drove a 4 pot 16V and was very underwhelmed and also much preferred the 5 pots to either of the V6s. If low insurance is an issue try and find a 2.3 10V. You still get the 5 pot character. All IMHO. thumbup

Agreed, S2 is the best but a lot more expensive, complicted and difficult to insure. Also, go straight from a 20v into an S2, which I have done on a few occasions and the S2 feels much quicker but also a lot heavier.
A 2wd 20v is much quicker than you would first think, once you get it moving.

If you have the money however then yes, S2 without question.

i wouldnt knock the 2.8 v6... i have a 20v at present and had two 2.8s previously, never had the chance for a back to back but the 2.8 is fun, quite peaky as well for a 12v. more of a GT car than a sports car but still capable. agree on the FWD coupes also but its part of the heritage/car to get a quattro. needs to be done!

and if you want noise, the 2.2 10v KV engine imho is an aural treat. not that quick but you will not be using your radio much.
