Best internet security?
Discussion
I use AVG on my Laptop, but just AV - not the full package. I just stick with Windows Firewall & Defender. Not hardcore security, but adequate as long as you're careful. I use a Firewalled router too which helps at a basic level.
I was shocked when installing it how much it has bloated over the past few years.

If you have the installation media, just remove Norton completely from your computer and reinstall it. It will automatically register the remaining amount of your subscription.
Norton Antivirus is very good, but I find the Norton Internet Security package too paranoid and it seems to give a lot of problems, especially with Vista, which certainly doesn't need that kind of help (Vista has enough problems of its own).

Hi,
Well the latest PC Pro magazine (March 2009!!) reviews Security Suites. The winner was Avira Premium Security Suite with BullGuard Internet Security 8.5 coming a close second.
Personally I use ESET Smart Security on my desktop (Vista Ultimate 64-bit) and ESET NOD32 Antivirus on my laptop (Vista Ultimate 32-bit) and both are excellent. If you can't decide I'd suggest spending £3.99 for PC Pro and reading the review.
Personally, I find PC Pro reviews too heavily influenced by cost considerations. I look at best performance as I'm fortunate enough not to have to worry too much about the cost.

Eset - Nod32 for AV and they have a firewall and AV called smart security suite - started using nod32 when AVG free missed some trojans and I lost a hard drive to the hybris virus
avast is great and free, but slow, it missed antispyware 2009 that a friend got from some porn site
norton blocked a site my brother uses on his round the world trip, advice to non tech parents was to disable norton (norton tech support) so they wiped it
they use avg as they not use the net a lot and it came pre-installed

I would caution against Avast. I initially used it when I moved to Windows XP 64-bit (it was one of the very few antivirus products at that time that supoprted 64-bit). I quickly looked for an alternative after it alerted me to two viruses on my system rather than preventing them from getting there in the first place. I then went for NOD32 from ESET and have now moved on to ESET Smart Security for my desktop.
I would far rather pay for a product I can rely on than a free one as to me a weekend rebuilding my system following an infection is worth far more than the £50 or so for a 1st class product.
Many will recommend different suites - usually the one they use. The only true way to guage the efficacy of various products is to read independent reviews. The problem then is that the reviews don't agree! You won't really go wrong with most of the major products; I recommend ESET (it works for me), others will recommend other products - ultimately, it's your choice! ;o)

I think nod32 is the best AV software, check out http://www.av-comparatives.org a good independent comparison site..
only use windows firewall after seeing the fps hit on online games and figured not want a 3rd party firewall checking everything I do to make sure nothing goes wrong all the time
have recommended eset's security suite for a guy, he could have claimed it on business expense, so he goes for avast as it is free and then loses access to his pc for several hours, by chance I was in the area so could fix it, had I not been then it would be bad for him
malwarebytes.org is another free and good trojan scanner - missed one of my downloads, but did not get around to isntalling it, so nod32 might not have scanned it yet
