Is anyone here involved in micro-breweries?
I am looking at taking on the tenancy of a farm in the next couple of years, and as a nice 'value-add' business, am interested in establishing a micro-brewery producing a number of small volume beers for sale in the local area (it would also make good use of some of the redundant buildings). Does anyone have any contacts - either producers or suppliers that may be able to give me some pointers both in terms of production/business planning/financials?

Yeah I saw that, but bare in mind it's a two y.o. article. I've seen installed kits with one firm (and they look pretty smart) for approximately £25.0k - not 'small beer' by any stretch of the imagination - and this is for a size of operation they reckon is more than adequate to keep one person employed full-time. If this plan is a goer, then the building on site I have in mind doesn't need a great deal of work to get it ship-shape, so it's quite an interesting prospect - especially to include for a bid for a farm business tenancy.
And of course I have 'expert witness' experience in the product...

As someone who has been involved in manufacturing on a self employed basis for many years, I will say that it is far too easy to concentrate on the product, and how you are going to make it, rather than how you are going to sell it.
I've since learned that the correct thing is to look at the whole thing backwards. Start with the point at which the customer gives you the money, and work back from there, for instance-
How many customers are there
How much money are they each giving you
How did you find them
How did they find you
How much profit are you making on the sales
How much are you charging
How much is each one buying, and how often
What exactly are they buying, and why are they buying it from you and not somebody else
When you have answered all these questions satisfactorily, then you will be in a position to look at the manufacturing side of things
