Just new and wondering if anyone can tell me if the M badges were only displayed on cars such as the M3/M5 etc, I ask as I note a 2001 Z3 advertised as having M sport interiour, (which is red/black leather) also has small M badge on steering wheel?Thank you Deerhound.

M badges are found on all M sport model cars, this is from a 320d M sport to an M3.

M badges are found on the steering wheel, alloys etc etc.

M badges purely means it's an M sport.

'M Sport' was given to the lower tier of the range from about 2003-4. They were just called 'Sport' models prior to that - SE being the alternative.
They give people the impression that they are buying something a bit special, when they are not. 'Brand marketing' I beleive is the expression.
They have nothing to the M division as such - despite what the name suggests.

I would suggest that the seller of this Z3 knows nothing about the car, or is just playing on the 'M' name to gain your interest, as they seem to have done. The alternative to sports seats are 'comfort' seats which are those grandad armchair types removed from the 7 series. I have never seem a Z3 that has these.
If you speak to the seller and they try to tell you its an M sport interior, its not, it was just specified as having red inserts on the leather seats by the first owner. And if it has the 1.9L engine, dont beleive them when they say it was fettled by the M division, because it wasn't.

It might be, mt E34 had M-sport wheel and gear knob and that was 10 years older than this car in question.

Weather or not the car was packaged as an 'M sport' doesnt really matter because as you say, its just brand marketing.

All BMW Sport models have M branded steering wheel, manual gearshift, door entry sills, alloy wheels etc.

They have done for 20 years but it seems some people still dont 'get it' and still think the owners of perfectly standard cars are pretending to have an M3 or something.

What about //M boot badges? Do the 'Sport' cars have those as standard? I have a friend with a 130 Sport and while I accept that the steering wheel, gear shift etc.. badges are factory spec I think he put the boot badge on.

The seller is totaly correct in the discription.! From 2001 BMW introduce the Sport range for the Z3 to follow the "ZM" Roadster, the sport has the same interior as the "M" And the two tone Red & Black Leather was one of the options and All the sports came with the 17" "M" Alloys and other "M" Sport options.!What you have seen advertised is a Z3 3.0 M Sport.yes

Not seen any 1 Series M Sports with the //M badge on the boot, I've got a 123d M Sport and a couple of mates have 130i M sports and they certainly havent got one so sounds like a later addition.

We have been looking to buy a 130i M Sport, and saw one at a local dealer that had a //M badge on the boot (and no 130i badge). I thought it looked quite cool initially, but then had second thoughts as I've always ridiculed people with //M badges on non-M cars. Didn't buy it, since it was an auto. Have now bought one, which we should pick up any day now (just waiting for dealer to get 2 new tyres fitted), and it's de-badged on the boot, which I quite like - only the twin tail pipes give away that it's a 130i.

Debadging a 130i is a good move, as it will stop oafs in 123ds trying to race/overtake/beat you at every opportunity, even when you just want to pootle along.

//M badges on the boot are silly.

I imagine that a debadged one gives people a right old shock when you boot it smile the poor 1er does have a reputation for being small engined...
