I've been trying to help out a friend who is having XBOX 360 Live problems, here is the summary:

Netgear DG834GT router
AOL Internet
Wired connection from XBOX to Router
PC wired connection to router
Laptop wireless connection to router
Router is using NAT and DHCP

XBOX gets its address automatically from the router via DHCP and works ok for 10 minutes on Live. It then suddenly loses the connection. When I check the IP address on the xbox it has changed. It was 192.168.0.5 (DHCP) but now it has 169.something and it wont connect. the AOL IP address is 92.something so its not picking up a 'real' address from AOL.

Rebooting the router seems to fix the problem. Not sure if rebooting the xbox would also fixed the problem, havent tried that yet.

Neither of the PCs has any problem and carry on working normally. PC's are only doing google and AOL type stuff so no torrents or anything unusual running.

Anyone have any idea why the xbox is losing its connection and then coming up with the 169. address , I am stumped !

Cheers

Sonds like an IP conflict, you sure theres not something else using the router?? PSP, Nintendo DS, iPhone etc....

Best thing to do would be to set up the xbox with a static IP.

Make it a number out of the way, something like 192.168.0.100

The settings for the xbox should be something like this (just off the top of my head)

I.P. Address Static.

IP Address:192.168.0.100
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS Servers: (see your router, this will list them) Alternatively try on your PC, Start, Run: type 'cmd' press enter. Type ipconfig/all and your DNS servers will be listed there, stick these on the xbox.

Test your connection, if you have anything other than an open connection. go here http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_fo... to sort it out.

i was having a similar problem not so long ago restarted my router and its seems ok now

but with the new dashboard update there is nowhere (that i know of) to check you connection type (open, moderate, strict)

now seeing as im having no real problems connection to anybody. To my way of thinking i have a open connection

but i goto the new 100 vs1 game and i get an error from that saying i have a strict connection, now is the game just lying to me or what?

In the new dash, when you do an connection test and it says nothing, you have an open NAT, it only tells you if you have a strict or moderate.

Can I please tag a question onto this thread too?

My brother has a 360 that until recently worked fine on Live.

My parents have changed their ISP from Orange, running with an old Linksys router, to SKY and they are now running the bog standard ISP provided router.

His XBOX is using the Microsoft wireless adapter (Ethernet connection is not available due to room location). He cannot for the life of him work out how to change the setting so that the XBOX can connect to the 'new' internet connection.

Anyone know which menu's he needs to use?

Thanks for the replies. I set it with a fixed IP address, but having looked around the internet it seems there may be some ports that can be opened up so I'll try that and see if it fixes the problem

Can anyone tell me the difference between , strict, moderate and Open NAT and can I change something on the router to make it open ? Or will openeing up the ports do that ?

Cheers

Opening up the ports will set it to open, follow the link I had posted in my first comment, its specifically for your router and xbox live.

Ok thats good - the page linked to has lots of red x boxes here there should be pics (maybe my connection at fault) but all I need is the port numbers which appear to be 3074 and 88 from that page, so thanks for that. I will go and add them in then see if it fixes everything

If you have used 192.168.0.100 for the static IP of the Xbox.

Then you'll need:

TCP: 80
UDP: 80
TCP: 3074
UDP: 3074
TCP: 53
UDP: 53

These are according to the microsoft site here..
