In my family the above story could easily be an attempt at diversion. They'd have seen it in Computer Active or on TV, decided they wanted it, done zero internet price research and then paid top dollar in Currys. Knowing my reaction to this type of behaviour a hasty story similar to yours would be devised. Offer to go back with them and get their money back. That'll let you know if they are telling the truth.
