I'm still umming and ahhing over whether to get this or not.

The Demo is great but I hate the control layout with the controller so I'd need a joystick as well and I couldn't find a shop that sold one and it will make it a very expensive game.

Callan, I got a Saitek AV8R from ebay and it's OK. The only drawback is that you can't perform the equivalent of a right-stick-click so that you can look around which is frustrating so I normally use the joypad.

You get used to it pretty quickly and FWIW I absolutely love the game!

After much umming and ahhing (I've played the PC original and all incarnations since 2001 or whenever it was) I gave it and picked this up on eBay for £23 last night. Can't wait for it to come! I can't bring myself to fork out for an Xbox joystick, I know it won't be a patch on my Saitek Cyborg… I remember when they announced that joystick years ago, perfect for lefties biggrin

Just bought this game and I'm really enjoying it.
It's my first flying game, so pleased to play it on Arcade mode (that's tricky enough when 6 Messerschmitt's are coming the other direction at 300mph!).

I find the control configuration fine - but having never used a joy stick, I don't have any pre-conceptions as to how it should feel. Left stick for tilting the plane (forward, back, right, left) and right stick for throttle (forward / back) and rudder (right and left). L2 for zoom on target; R2 for machine gun trigger.

I'd recommend the game for its atmospheric graphics and pick-up-and-play-ability.

(Edited to add - I'm on PS3)

I played it briefly, it was a lot better than I expected.

I still prefer the PC version though, the same as I prefer PC Modern sims like Lock On to arcadey games like Hawx.

Mind you at least you don't need a 2,000,000 page manual and 6 different keyboard overlays just to close the cockpit on the xbox ones like you used to in the old days. Clickable instruments are all well and good if the instrumentation is either a) In English or b) In an aircraft belonging to a English speaking country laugh

Or of course if you want to go all lily livered and have learned the language...

I got it earlier today 2nd hand for £20.

The single player is pretty good but I was most looking forward to the multiplayer.... which is a shame because it is complete gash.

The server appears to be an old ZX81, 90% of the time you get a server "unavaliable message", I don't pay £5 a month for that sort of st. Also the scoring system is stupid if you crash you don't lose a point, so everytime I am winning a dogfight the other player just crashed their plane! fking brilliant! What a waste of time. lastly if you do manage to get into match and have a game, when it finishes you get shoved back to the main menu and have to start the whole rigmoral again.

Crap of the highest calibre that lets down a great game.
