I apologise in advance if this is covered in the mac thread, but I couldn't see it. I'm new to mac and want to turn my desktop into a notepad/diary so i can keep track of things to do. I don't really want it as a separate application, I just want the actually desktop to display notes i write from start up. Is there any way of doing this?
Cheers!

Mail.app has a handy enough to do featureset, or notes in dashboard may be of use.

Stickies? Basically they're computer post-it notes.

Any new Textedit note created, can be saved to the Desktop - but why clutter up the desktop, when you can simply create a new folder, label it however you please, and save them there?
Each first time you save, you can select from the pop-out where to save it - and after a while, it becomes the default location.

Equally, and without having to create a new folder, your pre-existing Documents folder is on the Dock beside the Trash - use it, then you only have to go down to it, and click on it for it to display all the available docs (txt, rtf, doc, pdf, etc) you've saved in there.

Makes far more sense to work in that manner than as you're envisaging from you Windows days.
