A lad i know (age 17), has just started as an apprentice for 1 year with a national electrical wholesaler. He is working a 40 hour week and will be paid £100!!!

As this is obviously below the minimum wage for his age, are the rules different for apprentiships?

Try asking on a non vehicle based forum, you might get a more sensible answer on such forums as www.swarb.co.uk

The business section of PH is not vehicle based so is a good place to ask

My guess would be that the entire activity is classed as training/education and the £100 is toward expenses – i.e. he’s not working, he’s learning, so not getting paid a wage as such.

Could be completely wrong though.

Yes the rules are different for apprentiships, but he must be taking part in NVQ training and other technical certificates for his employment to be classed as an apprentiship. If he is simply going to work 5 days a week and having no training then he would not be an apprentice legally.

According to http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_money/emp...

Apprentices do not qualify for the national minimum wage if they:

* are aged 18 or under, or
* are aged 19 or over and are in the first year of their apprenticeship.

However, these apprentices are entitled to earn an amount of no less than £95 a week. This does not apply if you live in Northern Ireland.

Once you have worked as an apprentice for a year, if you have reached the age of 19 and are still working for the same employer, you will be entitled to the normal minimum wage for your age.

Thanks for all the info. I'll check regarding the NVQ.

At least it's a start but i feel they are ripping him with the wages!

It really depends on how productive he's being, but it's not unusual for an apprentice to cost a company money in their first year or two even without his wage bill.

check that is £100 before tax etc.
From that link http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/your_money/emp...
@ £3.57 x 40 = £142.80 less tax etc, it may well be £100 take home pay
