Like alot of people at the moment I have been made redundent and need to start the search for a new position.

With out boring you to death with my life history I work in sales. Ive spent most of my working life in the motor trade. My last position involved the day to day running of a small business. In an ideal world I would like to venture into another industry but I appreciate its a difficult time.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Ive done the normal trudge through the internet job sites.

Thank you

I could spend all day suggesting jobs other than what you've already done but without knowing what your able or want to do there's little point.

Does your redundancy deal include some form of help with job hunting? If so use it! We had a deal with a company called Penna and I went on a couple of seminars (intro to self employment and one on networking) and had a few meetings with a career advisor who gave me a load of tips on how to get my CV looking good. It's also a boost to the morale as it shows you there's a lot of people in a similar situation to you, and a fair few jobs out there.

ETA: Oh and sign on with the job centre straight away, you'll only get £67/week from them (unless you have less than £16k savings), but the main point is they will then pay your NI contributions for you.

Unfortunately my deal consisted of 3 weeks notice and 3 weeks redundency pay for the 3 1/2 years Ive been employed. I went into work on Monday morning and an hour later I was on my way home that was the first I know about it so it wasn't much of a deal.

same thing happened to me, except they gave me half an hour to get off site, 5 months later and Im still looking. TBH there are loads of sales jobs out there, how I wish I could do sales.

I have some advice to offer-

Never miss an opportunity to tell people what you are looking for. Put it on here, if people don't want to read it they won't, so don't worry about boring anyone. Start with the usual stuff, where you are, how old you are, what you've done, what you are looking to do. You never know, somebody with a job to offer, in your area, might look at your post. It might be a very small chance, but what has it cost you?

Same here as of last night! I'd love to say I'd look at doing something different, ideal world scenario would be to start out on my own in something, but I don't know which way to go with that (despite always having ideas!). Boxy - don't do sales ;o) (well if you really want to, do it, but that's what I'm trying to get away from!)

Ok, back to the ideas page... I've been trying for months to try and suss out something I would like to do, not necessarily for fame and fortune, but something I know I won't get bored with etc.

These are the things I broadly like (in no particular order!):
Skiing/Snowboarding, Fast cars/Driving, Photography, Shooting, Fishing, Sailing, Business Planning, Motorsport, Travel, X-Box (sometimes!), Money, Listening to people, Mountains, Sex, PR/Marketing, Le Mans, Good food (cooking and eating), Learning new things

Skills:
Gobsteyness, Organising, Researching, Telling a story, Persuading, Being accurate, Punctuality, Creativity (sometimes)

My one concern if I try and look for something different is that other than experience, I don't really have tangible skills (i.e. I'm not a brickie or a welder or an accountant etc). I'm competent at a lot of things, but I'm not necessarily professional

register with as many online agencies as you can stand to. Jobsite, Monster, CV Library, Reed etc are all pretty good. They sned you regualr e-mails with jobs meeting the criteria which you set when you register and you can usually alter these if you get loads of crap you don't want. I have found Linkedin and even Facebook to be useful tools in my current recruitment drive so may be of use to you too.

As above, tell EVERYONE. and don't write off the jobcentre either.
