In the next few months i'll be moving back to Cornwall, as I am going through the stages of buying a house in Truro.

For the last six years I have worked in the bus & coach industry, usually as a driver but recently I have gained experience in Operations including day to day running of services, taking telephone enquiries and complaints from the public, keeping both staff and vehicle records and communicating with different departments and management. I have staff training experience, having worked for one of the large transport companies as a route trainer and vehicle familiarisation trainer. I have also worked in the engineering side of the industry, albeit in an unofficial role.

I could go straight back to driving every day when I move back to Cornwall, but I want to take on a job that will give me much more of a challenge, and eventually more responsibility. I would also like to go into an industry that gives me the chance to advance along a progressive career path, rather than the single position most drivers hold from the start of their career to retirement.

I am happy to travel and even work away from home for the right opportunity, but I am struggling to find something that sounds like it might be what I am looking for.

Should I look into retraining? I am 25, and much more of a practical learner than academic. I would consider my writing standards to be fairly good and my reading very good.

As always, all advice/criticism welcome!

Are you sure that the pointy end of Cornwall is the best place to start your new career from?

Get yourself a vocational career and never look back, become a gas fitter/plumber/bathroom fitter.

I have a mate who is in the RFA and is generally based down your way. If I had to change career or do something else for a few years that's what I'd do. Is civil servizzzzz so not that taxing and plenty of time off to boot.

Good luck.

There are some fairly big personal reasons behind the move, though i'm quite happy to work away from home.

How much of a market is there for jobs like these? Admittedly i'll be needing a gas fitter in the house I've bought, so obviously there is work there!

Where would be the best place to go for training? College? Does anywhere do on the job training?

The RFA? At a guess the Royal Fleet Auxilliary? Possibly a daft question but how interesting is the work? Where would I go to find out about it?

Thanks!
