I have a patio door in the living room, that was obviously once wooden framed and supported the load of the bricks above the opening, but was replaced by the previous owners with cheap upvc. Naturally this is sagging a little under the weight...

Does anyone have experience of costs of putting a lintel in above a patio door? Though I do a lot of DIY round the place, I don't really fancy this one! If possible I'd try and keep the exisiting patio doors and put them back in.

(Patio door is about 6" wide, and lintel would be on the single (outer) leaf only, I think there is already a lintel on the inner leaf of the wall as there's no deflection. It's double skinned, but there's little to no airgap. Above the opening it's std 1930's semi, two storey stuff, so no massive loads on it. Not too bothered about making good the inside finishes as I'm busy renovating that bit anyway!)

This is a very common problem when retrospectively fitting non structural windows (ie most modern windows).

I usually install a 150x100mm unequal angle rolled steel lintel (angle iron). Clearly the bottom couple of courses of bricks will have to be removed and the bricks above temporarily supported with acro props or similar, before the bricks are relaid on the lintel.

Worth bearing in mind that this will reduce the effective height of the window aperture by around 10mm, so if fitting new windows, they need to be made a touch shorter.

Cost-wise. £75 to £100 for the steel, £200/£250 to install.

http://www.lintels.co.uk/singlebricklintels.htm . Use the LA lintel. Expect cost to be in the region of £600+(inclusive), any less than that and its not worth a builder/bricklayer turning up for just a days work.
