Gallery: Monaco Historic Grand Prix

Pics prove PHer Jolyon Sandercock's weekend was fabber than ours...

Grab your crash hats and goggles chaps, and feast your eyes on this festival of nostalgic motorsport e-mailed to us by PHer Jolyon Sandercock who's just back from the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco.

JS travelled to Monaco at the weekend with the Bentley Drivers Club and tells us: "The Club put on an awesome long weekend of hospitality and brought a stunning collection of cars down. We watched the races from the roof of the Cafe de Paris and the poolside, overlooking the Fairmont hairpin. God only knows what you'd pay for that on Grand Prix weekend..."

The Monaco Historic GP features single-seaters, sports cars and sports prototypes, from before 1947 to 1984, and along with the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Le Mans Classic is one of the three most important classic motorsport events in Europe.

The 'real' Monaco Grand Prix takes place in a couple of weeks on May 16th, but will drivers or spectators have half as much fun as they do driving or watching these golden oldies?

Meanwhile, for those of you still with time on your hands after the Bank Holiday, how about a quick round of 'Name That Car'?

I went 2 years ago and thoroughly recommend it. We stated in the Fairmont hotel on the hairpin. Mrs ADP sat at the poolside bar and I watched the races. Something for everyone!!

Jolyon Sandercock? Sure it isn't Julian Sandercock? Quite a rare name and I know the later's family was into their classic cars.

Stunning photos... and must be lovely to see the olds cars being used as their makers intended still!

It was quite a stunning weekend, better than Goodwood there is nowhere in the world where you can get that close to the cars on the track and the paddock. Duncan Dayton was superb notching up his 10th yes 10th Monaco victory. Without all the people at the modern race, also Audi had brought the new R8 GT as well.

Now thats a racing car for real men- Wonder if mondern F1 drivers would know what that stick on the right does? They'd probably guess its for the 5 different traction control settings biggrin

We went two years ago and the event is spectacular. The paddock is situated on the harbour front and open to the public on the Friday so you can just wander around having a good nosey at the cars. There's not the overtaking that one might expect at an event like Goodwood Revival, but the sound of the cars bouncing off the buildings is awe-inspiring. And sitting in Casino Square watching Paul Edwards in the Penske PC3 on a hot lap, or Stretton in the P34 is enough to bring a tear to the eye of the ardent historic motor racing enthusiast. Recommended.

OMG these photos are stunning!

Personal fave is Tom Pryce's Shadow. Brings back memories that does as it was the car featured in my first Scalextric set. As a 5 year old the box looked looked massive, with a low angle shot of the Shadow featuring prominently on the front, it's airbox looming like a huge tower. Happy days!

Many thanks for posting and please, please can we have some of these fabulous pics turned into wallpapers?

So true!Although I was born in the 80's I prefer to watch vintage footage of these cars going round to the modern F1's, though to be honest I don't know what the black no.5 is-looks stunning!!

Any ideas anyone??
