I'm getting one of the 2 and i was aiming for the v lux 20 but i just want a little more input.
What does surprise me is that the d lux 4 is more expensive than the v lux 20. can anyone shed any light on this please?
From what i can gather the 20 gives you 12x optical zoom and 60 fps in hd mode for video. And for these benefits you pay less than the d lux 4, what am i missing here? Does the d lux have a better lens or sensor?
I will be getting a leica model as opposed to the panasonic though.
Also, anyone know of a good sale on the d lux 4 once the v lux 20 comes out at the end of this month?
Thanks

I have the D-Lux 4 and I'm afraid I can't shed any light on the v lux 20. There will however, be a reason why the 20 is cheaper!

I would say 2 things... D-Lux 4 takes VERY good photos, but it *could* do with a bit more zoom, so if getting close is important, the v 20 might be the one for you.

For landscapes the 4 is surprisingly good - it goes with me everywhere, when DSLRs are too big.

This taken a few weeks back with the 4:

The D lux 4 has a larger sensor, nicer lens (i think), and has more manual control, a hot shoe for external flash etc.

But seriously, why buy the leica over the panasonic. They are the same camera. same lenses, same sensors, same bodies, same control, same everything!

Not true. Leica cream off all the best bits (they vary a lot), a different more waterproof body, have different firmware and a very different warranty.

Okay fair enough, i know there is a difference but leica £549.00, panasonic lx3 £314, thats a difference of £235, and considering most of the reviews i can see cannot differentiate the 2, the leica just doesent make any sense, in my opinion of course.

Indeed, If I was considering cost, the Panasonic looks a really good deal.

I would think 90% of people would do better buying the Panansonic.

Okay, i'll put this to you. Do you think you could take better pictures with the leica then the pana? I'm not be facetious, i dont know enough about the differences between the two to know the answer to that question.

Well I live in the West Highlands of Scotland, so I wouldn't buy the Panasonic, as it would die from rust within a year... which is why I bought the Leica. (And The D3 over the D700).

A camera that works is what I need! But I'm sure I could get as good a photo from the Panasonic.... before it died from water ingress. As I said, 90% of people would be happy with a Panasonic.

Also, cameras are tax deductable for me, so cost mainly relates to cash flow and depreciation, not cost price - the Leica (sorry, it's a badge thing) will keep some value, the Panasonic will be almost worthless within a year or so.

Okay fair enough, If the leica is waterproof i guess that justifies some of the cost (i was out with the 50d today and it started to rain, i almost shat myself hehe , couldnt get my camera back in its bag quick enough )

Thank you so much for your replies. Getcarter, i am constantly in awe of your talent as a photographer.
I think i am right in saying that the Leica does it's own colour balance and image processing within the camera as well as other minor things. However, when you add up all the little things you are getting a noticeably different result from the panasonic.
I always try and buy the best i can afford within my price bracket and that little red badge is such a draw for me. Heck, why do people pay anywhere from £10 george to £700 for jeans that are essentially made from similar denim? Or choose a Jaguar over a Mondeo?
Also i believe i heard that the after sales service with leica is second to none. Along side with making my final purchase from John Lewis ( after price matching ) it is extra peace of mind for me.

I will probably go for the 4 but will wait for one or two serious reviews from the 20 to come out.
Looking on Vimeo there are some very good short films made with the d lux4.
I mean is a compact digital camera really designed to have a 300mm lens? Isn't that like trying to use a traction kite to paragliding? Bad metaphor maybe but you get my drift.

I've got the Leica and love it, but as Mr Carter says it could perhaps do with a bit more reach.

Thanks Dobbo.
Right then, hands firmly in pockets to stop me getting the d lux. I'll just have to wait for the reviews of the v lux.

Just treated myself to the D-LUX 4 today, as my ancient Ixus 400 died earlier this week frown

Compared to its Lumix LX3 brother, or the next as good as, at a couple of hundred quid cheaper, it's no doubt appalling value for money.

But that didn't stop me from buying it smile
