Can somebody please explain to an old fart like me how you jailbreak the iPhone and once done, can you still use iTunes?

Can I still buy apps from the iTunes store and where do I buy apps that iTunes don't like etc?

A brief explanation would be great as I really have no idea WTF I'm doing!

Many thanks, old fart with new technology smile

http://blackra1n.com/

blackra1n will jail break up to 3.1.2 (not sure if that's the latest i don't think it is...) and blacksn0w will unlock the phone to work on any carrier. Black rain will not affect the operation of itunes or the installation of apps. To get the non-apple approved apps you'll need either cydia or Rock, both of which are included with blackra1n.

If you're on a later firmware then I don't know biggrin

If you're on 3.1.3 then it looks as though blackrain won't work, try this instead:

Cydia and Rock are app-store alternatives bundled with blackra1n, it contains an app-store-like front end and all of the installers. Install them and you'll have access to loads of apps and games

As he says above, Cydia or the Rock. Cydia is dog slow, never used Rock. However I have now un-jailbroken my iPhone with the latest 3.1.3 os now as the only thing of any use (apart from SBSettings) was Categories, putting apps into folders and that is coming with the next OS4 release in a month or two.

I'm also interested in knowing the answers to some of the OP's questions.

What problems will this cause the phone?
Can you remove the jailbreak??

The phone.seems identical it's jail broken.

As I understand it, to remove the jailbreak you plug it into iTunes and restore.
