With the SDR looming, talk of getting out of Afghan sooner rather than later and some not very subtle hints about 'massive' MoD cuts, where will this leave our military in a year or so's time?

I think the RAF, rightly or wrongly will bare the brunt of the pain, aircraft don't come cheap and whilst I hope they don't amalgamate us with the RN/Army it is going to be a much, much leaner RAF IMO.

Of course, being completely honest, if it weren't for the prolonged campaign's in the Middle East can you imagine the state the military would be in now?

Scares the hell out of me too, and I've only got two years left on my 22yrs with the RN.

I've got a plan, but it'd never work due to the massive resistance that would come from various interested parties, not least the self-designated demigods that fly around in aeroplanes.

Get three services to stick to their areas of expertise, for starters, reducing the massive (and massively expensive) duplication of admin, support and command structures across the armed forces - people wearing different colours, essentially doing the same job.

In simple terms - anything that goes 'uppity up up' belongs to the RAF, whether it's transport, ground attack, ASW helicopters, training flights etc etc. We already fly both RAF and Army aircraft off ships, so why we still think we need the FAA is beyond me and my little brain, similar with the AAC. Anything that floats or deliberately sinks is the RN's, and anything for running around on land and damaging things etc belongs to the Army. Makes perfect sense to me.

Some work has already been done in this direction - see the Joint Helicopter Command for instance, but only really scratching the surface.

Stand easy!

Makes perfect sense to me, however it is highly unlikely to happen.

What is far more likely is that the helicopters of the RAF will be amalgamated into the AAC, and the fast jets into the FAA. If the Carriers that are being built at the moment ever get commissioned, any JSF ordered for the RAF will be marinised and they will join the Lightning IIs already earmarked for the Elizabeth Class carriers.

Probably.
