Do ANPR Cameras actually store images – as suggested in the article below. I was under the impression they only scanned the image for recognisable number plates and then stored the number as data rather than a photograph.

The images are not stored by the cameras.

However, a record is kept of the enquiry. This contains information including the number, location, date and time. It's this which provides the 'tracking database'.

Journey time cameras usually process and one way hash the resulting VRM at the camera and it is just the hashed value which is sent back for processing.

Enforcement cameras capture an overview image and a image of the number plate and store it for prosecution. No idea how long for, sorry.

Enforcement cameras different to ANPR though ?

ANPR (obviously) doesn’t need to be looked at (ie number data only stored)

Enforcement needs someone to look at the image to check the details.
Just that the BBC article states that the cameras (ANPR) store images of the car and driver etc. Can’t imagine the size of the database that would be needed to store all that info based on the number of cameras and vehicles passing through.

As far as I am aware the images are stored of the vehicle but they never show the driver.
