Controversial one here but I was watching Louis Theroux the other night and they raised the subject of steroids.

Are they truly that effective when coupled with an aggressive work out regime? What exactly does it do?

I'm not looking to be recited back all the usual crap about "roid rage" etc etc

I'm genuinely interested, maybe not necessarily in using them, just a strange interest in their effectiveness. Also is there any legal supplement than has similar effects?

Are you trying to say everyone who takes steroids goes on a cop killing rampage?

Are you some sort of moron?

I asked a genuine question on a subject that is generally considered taboo. My interest on the subject was raised by a documentary that brushed over the subject and I asked for some details here maybe, like many other subjects on PH, someone has either personal experience or knows of someone who is clued up on the matter.

I am not interested in the michelin man swollen look, I am perfectly happy with my lifestyle and the way I look.

Your probably referring to what I watched.... he only brushed over the subject as the "athletes" seemed hesitant to discuss it

Ok. I would have thought that that program would have settled the matter. There is a wide use of steroids in the medical practice, but those used illegally normally for asthetics imho is just a bit gay and has too many dangerous side effects.

Yes I'm aware of the medical usage. Its more the performance enhancing steroids I'm interested in.

FYI not for my use I dont need nor want to look like I have water balloons under my skin. It was more interest as to what it actually does... does it actually make you perform better... how does it achieve the results they claim? Does it in fact do what it says it does?

I'm pretty ignorant on the subject, because I have no interest in applying such substances to my training. However, I've found a description of anabolic steroids:

"Before we get into how steroids work, let's define Anabolic steroids. The word anabolic simply means building up as opposed to catabolic that means breaking down. Anabolic steroids are manufactured or synthesized derivatives of the male hormone, testosterone. Testosterone has two main functions on the body, the anabolic effect and the androgenic effect.

1. The anabolic effect is responsible for growth, muscular development, and the masculine body contour of the adult male.
2. The androgenic effect stimulates the effect of the male secondary characteristsics after puberty, causing growth of the beard, pubic hair, development of the penis and change of voice."

As I see it, the correct application of steroids, growth hormone or whatever act as a multiplier in that they will increase the effectiveness of a trainer's exercise and diet routine: The better your diet/training the greater the effect.

The biggest problem with steroids, as a recent movie (Bigger, Stronger, Faster??) suggested, is that there hasn't been anywhere near enough research to dictate empirically whether or not this steroid or that steroid is safe or most productive etc.

As for legal alternatives, there's always some new product that's '100% Anabolic' or 'Hardcore' but just legal or whatever...

What do Stallone, Shwarzenegger, Hulk Hogan, the Rock, all have in common? They 'juice', or used to. Steroids work, big time. Nothing legal does, protein powder, creatine, etc total waste of money. 'Stacks' which is combinations of 'roids have been widely used since the late 1960s, mainly in the USA, bodybuilding is ultra competitive, so it is very well established what works. I suppose it depends how lucky you feel. Lots of fake kit out there adds to problems sourcing genuine products. Lets be honest the whole big muscles thing is very 1980s. I think most guys would just be happy with a way to lose that gut! especially when you approach 35.

a
I 100% agree and do not use any supplements in my regime... all of my protein comes from my diet etc etc and that has worked EXTREMELY well for me.

It was more curiosity after watching the swollen body builders swerving Louis Theroux's questions over steroids.

If you take anabolic steroids and train fairly intensively you will gain size and strength.

Quickly.

Couple of important side effects though...as steroids chemically copy testosterone after

a while the body stops producing it in quantity so things can shrink if you don't keep with the jabs.

Secondly, most muscles of the body grow to an extent when steroids are used, and that includes your

vital organs.

Open Heart surgery anyone?

This is a VAST oversimplification of their effects, obviously.

I have known people who used them short term and got big and didn't touch them again.

And I know a number of people who live on them, are massive, and are National class competitive bodybuilders.

Oh..and they're generally not cheap either.

Steriods don't give you big 'swollen' muscles they simply allow your body to recover quicker.

Therefore you can train harder and more frequently than you could normally which is what brings about the gains.

Dont be a silly boy. Google images of bodybuilders from the 1940s, compare to images of those from the 1980s. Notice any difference?
