Speaker upgrade

Quick question for some one.. Have a set of small Packard Bell speakers on my system at the moment with built in amplifier.
Would like to improve sound quality.
Have a set of spare large HiFi speakers same impedence rating but no built in amp.
Would they work ok or just blow the amp in the tower ??.
