British guy doesn't pay credit card bill and leaves Dubai, when he returns the bank gets the Police to seize his passport, employer sacks him as it doesn't want to get involved, friends won't let him stay at their place as they don't want to get involved. Now living behind a hedge, no job, no passport and it seems no hope.

Dubai, the place where dreams (illusions) are born.

That will encourage the fkwits to pay back their credit cards

I saw this as well, his Wife got out before they caught up with her as well

Someone goes to to make money there, and chooses to act as though at home,

Good live in a hedge without a penny, bet he wont dare do it again

Didn't some PHer post about how cars on credit were being left in airport car parks because it was shameful to be seen borrowing money?

What an odd predicament. I can't help thinking that he's the master of his own downfall though. Situations like that don't just happen, there are doubtless plenty of steps along the way to stop things..

good, it needs to happen here too - too many people fleeing the country owing money.

people need to be more sensible - he shouldn't have racked up a credit card bill then should he?

His wife can work - he only owes about five grand!

But he was clearly NOT skipping the debt - or he wouldn't have returned, would he?

I assume you didn't read the article very closely.

There have been many instances of people moving out, getting a job and signing rental contracts for cars or living premises, then being made redundant without warning, at which point the creditors call in all the debt and if you can't pay it instantly you're arrested and charged and your passport confiscated. Similar to if your bank decided today to withdraw your mortgage and being arrested if you couldn't pay it back.

When I heard about this the report suggested it was due to a change of bank account that led to the problem.
Something to do with his employer not paying wages into new account.

I am sure he could pay if he wanted to, just being stubborn. There are very few middle class people who can't rustle up this kind of dough if they have to...

Haha

You would have to be seriously stubborn to live homeless in order to prove a point.

Surely his wife could just get a £6k loan and pay his debt, its not a huge amount of money even for someone on minimum wage.

Just the usual BBC anti-capitalist, pro-socialist made-up story. Big business and financial prudence is bad, no personal responsibility and big government looking after the proletariat is good.

I'm thinking the same,. Given that I may or may not know someone who possibly works for this bank, I may try and find out. I suggest it's his pride that's stopping him paying fees/charges/interest.
It's plastered all over the local rag here today....real heart rendering stuff. rolleyes

I think many people are not reading the story very carefully wink

Four months ago, Nicholas sold all the furniture in his house and took the money to the bank. It was just enough to cover the £6,000 the bank said he owed at that time.

The offer was rejected. Nicholas says he was told that with interest and charges, he now needed to pay nearer £11,500.
IF this is true, it sounds like every time he scrapes together what they asked for, they increase it.

This guy is a pr1ck.Pay up you pathetic idiot.

And I LOVE the attitude of the bank out there. "you're not a home now boy, where you can just sack off your financial commitments"

His stupid tart of a wife should just send them the money.

What have every single person you have ever known get into financial trouble with credit cards got in common?
THe phrase "It's not fair" or "It wasn't my fault".
You have a one-sided interview with a person who has reneged on debt. How true do you think that is, exactly?

I read somewhere that a mate offered him AED55k, but the bank wouldn't accept it!
And, why isn't he behind bars? Everyone else is that defaulted on their finacial liabilities.

This has always been the case in the middle east!!! atleast for the past 20 odd years. Everything is linked to your passport and if you mess up, it is on the immigration database. no entry, no exit!!!! or more like yes entry no exit!!
