Whenever I sync my iPhone 4 with my iMac I get an error box come up saying "camera not found".

iTunes still sees the phone OK and I can sync no problem but obviously somewhere it associates the iPhone with a camera. Have no issues when I connect an iPod to the iMac.

So..is there somewhere in my Mac where I can dis-associate the iPhone with a camera?

Thanks!

Sync issues? fking sync issues?

Dont talk to me about sync issues. My 3GS has different settings and behaviours after each sync since going to iOS4.

Sounds very strange - I had problems syncing my iPhone4 with iTunes until I did a software update for OSX.

I think at one stage when I initially synced I clicked a button stating "is this a camera" or similar! Unfortunately once it had been clicked, it could not be unclicked smile

Syncing is no problem - I just have to click a button every time on the pop up!

Gary, I have exactly the same thing.
It's a Canon utility (Camera Window it's called) that is opened when you plug in the iPhone.
I have no idea how to stop it, as the application has no settings seemingly.

Don't worry, it's not a sync issue! smile

Oh I know it's not a sync issue. But yes - you are correct - it's the cannon utility! I'll scout to that and see if there is an option in there. Cheers!

No worries.

It's prompted me into looking and seeing if you can stop it! I'll report back if I find anything... smile

Funnily you cannot launch that software manually - it needs a camera to fire it up. Other half has the camera so cannot do anything frown

Ah well - if you find anything let me know!

My 3GS came with IOS4 already built in and behaves fine. I wonder what the issue is?

May not be relevant here, but one bit of expected functionality that simply 'doesn't work' in OS X is dot Mac (mobile me) sync when your home folder is hosted on a server (aka Network Home - i.e. what you have when you log into an OS X server on your workstation or laptop Mac).

Causes all sorts of problems and there isn't anything explicitly telling you not to try it, indeed it appears as if it should and does work.

However, my gut feeling is that something in the guts of OS X SyncServices uses unix 'special' files like pipes or fifos to work, which don't operate on AFP-hosted remote filesystems (like your home folder will be if you're on a Network Home).

Given what it does, SyncServices is pretty impressive, but it's not without bugs. The number of edge cases, not to mention the vast number of corner cases, makes dealing with everyones' circumstances very difficult.

Most people with problems have either upgraded through a huge number of systems (I've got one machine here that has *upgrade* installed all the way from 10.0 Cheetah to 10.5 Leopard without an erase and install, though I wouldn't want to do real work on it), or have oddball configs, or are trying to do something unsupported.

And for some really strange reason, Apple iPod / iPhone software has a habit of behaving in a completely undefined fashion when the cable is broken / out of spec. Examples are old iPod FireWire 400 cables on iPhones, new USB cables on old Macs only capable of USB 1.1 (step up TiBook - took me AGES to work out), and slightly damaged cables. Behaviour generally looks completely software-related but it isn't. My usual iGadget troubleshooting process starts with a known-good cable, FWIW...

I'm not sure that you can dissociate a specific device, but you can prevent apps opening automatically when you connect a camera.

To do this, open up ImageCapture from your apps folder. Select preferences and it should show you which app is set to open when you connect a camera (in your case, I suspect Camera Window from Canon).

Pretty sure you'd then have to manually open your preferred app when you connect a proper camera though.

PS As you reminded me that this has, at times, bugged me, I spent a minute on Google.

Install this:

http://flexibits.com/

Works very well (tried it with my iPad and Ixus 120 and so far so good. iPhone and 7D to go). Allows you to define what happens dependent on which device is connected.

No worries.

The flexbits thing works well too - have 4 devices setup and it works very nicely.
