I have an employee who has been calling a mobile top up service from a work phone,

We have got BT to block premium lines. We would like to try and trace which employee was doing it but all I have at the moment is the time and dates of calls and this only narrows it down to 4/5 staff.

We are trying to find out what company he/she was using, Google search brings up no satisfactory results. Does anywhere no I could get this information?

The number is 0906661 1206.

What make/model is your office phone system? It may be possible to log outgoing calls against the extension number used.

It's a pub and we only have two phones which every one has access to. I have a suspect but need to be 100% sure before I start disciplinary.

Could you sneakily find out which of them has PAYG and which has Pay Monthly? Might be able to rule someone out.

Might cost a little but phone the number - it is liable to go through a recording and say who they are.

Before you start thinking about disciplinary - and to save you lots of legal headaches down the line with an unfair dismissal case...

a) how much have the charged against your business - ie. are we talking pounds, hundreds or more?
b) even if you narrow it down to a few employees, good luck with making it stick against one employee unless they own up.

It is theft, but you may create yourself a bigger issue in making it stick. If it's not a big sum, I'd write it off, move on, and talk to all staff as a whole. They'll get the message.

As said, I would simply have a 5 minute chat with them all as a group and politely ask them not to do it again, disciplinary sounds too severe IMO.

The person we think it is has also stolen from other parts of the business, even to the point of taking the safe keys from the flat, but again it is very difficult to prove that it is him.

All in all it is starting to add up to a couple of hundred pounds. He will slip up eventually and I'll be waiting for him.

I will bring it up at the next staff meeting as it looks like it is going to be very difficult to prove.

If they are stealing get some CCTV, there are loads of options out there, that are dirt cheap and VERY discrete, some just record direct to mini SD or similar cards so you do not need to be a technical whiz.

Just make sure there is a "Legit" reason for their being CCTV
