I'm about to upgrade the trusty 'general' camera. I've had a play with the Sony in Jessops, but they didn't have an LX5 to play with. My sister has an LX3 which is the precursor and is pretty sharp.

I've narrowed it down to, the Panny and the Sony, as the title say really.

Anyone had any thoughts beyond the typical reviews that I've been reading on Google? Is the LX5 actually out there yet?

No experience of them but I think the Sony's bigger sensor results in quite a bit larger package when you consider attaching a lens to it. Whether you can put up with that has got to be the deciding factor as I'm sure it has the better image quality.

What's the warranty situation with S.E.? They are a Hong Kong based company.

Are either much smaller than the GF1 with a 20mm attached?

I bought said combo as a carry around, but find it a little too large for the casual pocket. May trade in to something else.

Panasonic GF1: 119mm x 71mm x 36.3mm
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5: 109.7mm x 65.5mm x 43mm
Sony NEX-3: 117mm x 63mm x 33mm

Those are dimensions from Google without stating specifically which lense you get (in the case of the GF1 and the NEX-3). Jessops don't sell the NEX-3 with the smaller pancake lens as standard: you get the larger zoom lens which is definitely bigger than the GF1. The LX5 has a fixed lens and would be in the same vein as the pancake lens on the other cameras (which does away with the zoom aspect).

The NEX-3 has not been called pocket friendly with the larger lens attached that's for sure. And if you're saying the GF1 is not particularly good, I would hazard a guess that the LX-5 is the way to go. It's supposed to be streets ahead of the

So, I would assume that the LX-5 would be the smallest in standard / most flexible guise.

Thanks for the replies. Good illustration with the photo dontfollowme. Thanks for that.

Looks like a trip back to Mathers to see if they will do a swap deal may well be on the cards.

Cheers, Bradders.
