Has this been asked before? I can't find it in the search anyway. Question: why is off the shelf food suddenly gone totally tasteless ? I'm talking about the stuff you chuck on at lunchtime; canned soups etc, and even the ready meals you dig out of the freezer months after you bought them.

I know the likes of Heinz, Bachelor's, Campbell's et al don't want us all stroking out into our soup bowls, that may be why they leave the salt out of everything. If only it were that simple. If just putting a pinch of salt and / or pepper brought it back to the way it used to be then fine, but it's not not not !!!

And don't get me started on Asda soups, the ones that come in big tubs. Honestly, if I was blindfolded I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between their pea n ham and their lentil. It's all so tasteless.

The more salt you put in, the saltier it gets, the more pepper you put in, the more peppery it gets, but it just doesn't do anything else frown It doesn't give the flavour back...

I'm now at the point where I need to put Knorr Aromat in everything. Is it just me, are my tastebuds dying?

I challenge anyone to read this thread title out loud. If there's anyone in front of you make sure you cover your mouth first.

To answer the question, I generally agree with you about the increasing flavourlessness of modern food. Having said that, for me the classic Heinz Tomato still maintains its magnetic allure. I expect it's full of sugar and all that bad stuff but by god it tastes good.

I completely agree about Heinz tomato soup. It has remained the same. Lovely with garlic bread mmm. Funny why it's so popular, because it tastes nothing like tomatoes.

Maybe that's why, maybe we don't really like tomatoes per se but we like Mr Heinz's representation of tomato, or Tomato®.

I tend to stick that Swiss veggie bouillon stuff in everything if nobody's looking, it seems to add some Flavor®.

I wouldnt say all of the shelf soups are rubbish.

as said above, the heinz cream of tomato is great, but i always still feel hungry after i have eaten one.

heinz big soups are pretty good aswell, chunky broth style, rather tastey. and the extra size ones have extra juice so more for mopping up with bread smile

I do think soups have changed, either that or my taste buds have with age. I know manufacturers change their receipes from time to time, but a lot of the Heinz soups have definately changed, with in my opinion only the Tomato resembling anything like I used to remember.

I do quite like the Waitrose own brand and the Baxters ones.

Homemade leek and bacon! Mmmmm.

What's off the shelf soup?

Batch it. And don't say it too fast either.

hehe

I'd suspect that the lower salt content is having less of a preservative effect.

Have you tried the 'fresh' ones with a short shelf life?

Have to agree about the salt thing. Because they've all reduced their salt levels, they are kinda tasteless now. And adding salt doesn't help... it needs to be there during manufacture to bring out the flavour.

That's what prompted me to start this thread; I opened a can of lamb and veggie big soup at lunchtime. It was bland as @rse to me frown

I usually have Heinz soups as a larder back-up plan and nearly always add bits to them...or rather, I've got leftovers that I want something quick and simple to be able to use them up with.
When camping, a good meal I used to make was a tin of clam chowder and then added an extra tin of clams to it.
Similarly, lobster bisque with an extra tin of lobster put in smile

Cock-a-leekie and royal game are my favorites.
BTW they do a cracking fry up if you are ever passing the visitors centre near Fochabers.
I had a Baxters "special" beef consomme yesterday and I was very impressed.lick

Pretty sure they've taken over Cambell's, recipes so far unchanged. Their condensed cream of chicken with white wine, or cream of mushroom, are a great cheat for the sauce in a chicken pie...

I'm not into these designer soups that come in plastic beakers for the thick end of two quid, they are invariably a disappointment
