social tensions = tribal conflicts I would have thought

bit simplistic to imagine that wars are fought simply because "tribe b don't like tribe a" though, usually there's some money/mineral rights etc involved

Not necessarily, African countries aren't necessarily that old or traditional, many are based on how far inland one or other European country could get before bumping into another finding a barrier to further travel or just going that'll do. This means in some cases groups that would have been a tribal country being spread over several countries.
