I understand the 7D and 5D MkII use the same batteries.

However, I've been told to ONLY buy the Canon batteries and not cheaper 'copies' as the Canon batteries have a 'chip' in them and it's so much more than just a battery!

Is that the case, what have other owners bought?

Due to the chip issue, I bought a 2nd OEM one - I know they're mega pricey compared with the 7 quid copy I used merrily in my 20D but I thought with a brand new camera, I'd stick to the proper stuff! With two of them in the grip, I would really struggle to run them down in a day of shooting so, an extra £50 on top of the £1200 was worth it for me.

It was the same with the panasonics, jessops now stock the chipped batteries and are fully compatable.
It maybe the same with the LP-E6 battery.
As for cost.
Canon - £79.99
Hahanel - £59

Canon £55 including shipping from Ian Kerr (Kerso) back in April. Don't know his current price but better than £79.99 I would imagine smile

Chip? What does it do other than to add vendor lock-in?

Just bought a genuine Canon lp-e6 for my 7d from HK throgh ebay cost was £17.99 inc P&P.
Camera recognises the battery as genuine Canon and even gives a Canon code very similar to that given by the battery supplied with the new camera.
Delivery took a coupla weeks, but was worth it for the saving IMO
You pays your money and takes your chance I guessbiggrin

There are some threads on the POTN forum about this. Seems that third party from China the best price is about £20+.

The Flash Centre in Birmingham has Delkin compatibles at reasonable prices.
