within our budget for a new car (35k'ish) we can get an almost new E Class Coupe 350CDi with less than 2000 miles on the clock from Mercedes UK - I have to say that they look nice and must be pretty swift too - will be having a go in one soon.

What should we be looking out for?

Don't take this as being unhelpful but I'm just wondering why people buy the coupe? Having been cramped in the back of a friends CLK I thought, if you want a hard top get the E Class it's based on for a usable boot and rear seats, or get the soft top for some open air drama - I just don't get 'big coupes', they seem like a compromise as they're too big to be truly sleek and sporty IMO yet still offer less space than saloon counterparts.

On a helpful note, at less than 2000 miles you'd expect no more than 1 owner, if you're worried about resale then COMAND, a popular paint colour (I personally think white is a fad that won't last), telephone pre-wiring, leather and autobox are always the pre-requisites mentioned.

I've got a CLK and was looking at the E Class coupe when it was announced earlier in the year. Oddly enough, there is less headroom in the rear of the E Class than in my CLK, which seems a bit strange since it is built on a bigger platform.

Anyhow, that aside, it is a nice stylish car and shouldn't have any major issues I wouldn't have thought.

Have a look on http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/ there is a thread talking about some issues on the E350cdi, not major, but not running completely smoothly and only getting 30mpg, after software updates it then jumps to 38mpg and runs smooth, but only for a while, may be sorted by now though? Have a look.

Coupe looks stunning, saloon looks dull.

Saloon will loose 55-60% over 3 years, coupes around 45% at most, so again a lot less to run.
Same with all coupes vs saloons though really, look at the 3 series, there are 330i saloons for £13k and the same age/mileage/spec. coupe is £17k and more.

Coupes are now going for over retail and a on a new one you are looking at May next year delivery, so if you have a good price on one jump on it.

there is only 2 of us (and two cats) and we rarely have people in the back so its not an issue - its just some luxury and a coupe - for the price seems like a good deal to me - will look up the issues as directed on MBForums . . .

cheers

The 2010 E coupe is based on the 2010 C class chassis, Hence why its a lot narrower in the cockpit and smaller in the rear than the 2010 E class saloon.

Ta, I wasn't having a dig, just curious about why people buy coupes. I think the coupe looks stunning, I guess I've always just viewed it from a tight-arse point of view, i.e. the coupe costs more than the bigger saloon (which looks very similar in many ways so surely couldn't be called dull?) therefore you get less space for the money, whether you need it or not, but then again if it has a higher resale value it's all the same in the end really.

You said it was Mercedes UK you were thinking of buying from, is it one of their Mercedes Direct dealerships? I bought my E Class from them in Manchester and they were a LOT more competitive than the franchised dealer network in terms of pricing and doing a deal.

Yes, I am aware of that Dave but the point I was making is that although the new E Coupe is built on a wider/longer platform (based on the current C Class) than my W209 CLK, it rather surprisingly has much less rear headroom. Nevertheless, that doesn't appear to be a priority for the OP anyway.
