I'm thinking of an iPhone 4 as a Christmas treat (they're now available to buy from Apple immediately), but hesitating as I have a newish 3GS. However.....

If I walk into a Vodafone store, do they issue micro SIM's free and on the spot (I want to keep my number of course)? Would they try to get me to enter into a new contract/data plan.

I currently am on a contract, so am unsure of the rules.

Thanks

Don't know the answer to your question, but something interesting I heard recently was that you can buy a 'micro sim cutter' from ebay and it literally works like a hole punch and trims your sim down to micro size. Apparently that's all a micro sim is. Apparently.

I assume from your post that you are already on a voda iphone contract with your 3gs in which case they should give you a microsim FOC (they did this for a guy I work with who bought a sim free iphone4).
You might need to call them up though to get this sim and once you have it in your hands you will still need to activiate it via the internet (very simple process).

No, my contract is for a Nokia E71. I hated that, so bought a 3GS from the apple store.

I could cut my SIM I suppose, I'm just nervous about wrecking it!

SIM punches are very easy to use, you insert them in the slot, the punch punches the chip bit out of the surround and you have a micro sim, no chance of fking it up.

Should you then wish to go back to a normal mini sim there are adaptors available.

Bought an iPhone 4 for the wife last week sim free to replace an HTC Desire that was on contract. Took the phone to the vodafone store in Bluewater who gave us a new microsim, fitted it and activated the phone in about 5 minutes free of charge - no tariff changes etc.
