Bought a Gigabyte GTX 470 Super Overclocked. Link below - factory overclocked 470 but with much better cooling than the standard 470 - runs cooler, draws less power and runs faster. Got some good reviews (I've linked one below.)

Installed (including both power connectors) with no drama.

Ran PC, went on Gigabyte website, downloaded correct drivers, crashed once then a restart sorted it and they seemed to install second time around. Restarted, fired up Black Ops and the prompt about 'you've changed something, shall we adjust settings' came up and I accepted. It crashed on the loading sequence. Restart, repeated. So I went and downloaded the nVidia website drivers. Rinse and repeat. On one occasion I fired up Black Ops and instead of allowing it to change my settings I declined, ended up in game and changed everything to max (1680x1050, 16x AA etc) and the game played fine but I wasn't getting any sound. Went out of game, played about with the Realtek thing and tried again. Game crashed on loading sequence. Same with Source based games. Windows runs fine however. I've double checked the drivers, from what I can see they're up to date.

Card seems to idle around 37 ish when the heatings not on (granted, it's -1 outside.) I did stress test with Furmark yesterday, after 5 minutes it slowly climbed to 87 before I bottled it and stopped Furmark. From a bit of digging the 470 should run into the 90's without too much ado.

The rest of my setup is: AMD Phenom X4 955 BE @ 3600.
Titan Fenrir Evo. This doesn't blow onto the GPU.
Gigabyte 870A-UD3.
4GB Crucial / Corsair RAM (can't remember which.)
Corsair TXP-650W PSU (GPU states minimum PSU is 550W.)
Coolermaster CM-690 II Advanced Dominator Case (with a 140mm, 80mm and 2 120mm additional case fans.) Reasonable job done of cable management so airflow should be pretty good in there.
Win7 64 bit.

I'm fast running out of ideas. I've tried googling but I'm not having much luck, although similar problems it's been suggested are due to overheating.

ETA:
Just ran furmark up to the high 70's. Had a nosy at OC Guru and the fan use does increase as the temp rises, but doesn't seem to have gone above 60%.

ETAA: Just returned the CPU to stock - 3200. Still doing it.

Help!

Okay, I'm pretty confident now this isn't a GPU problem - I think it's a problem with Steam. It was detecting that my GPU had changed (and didn't recognise it) and each time I fired the game up it asked me if I wanted to accept it's recommended settings. For once I went in and said,

'No,' and set them myself. It ran fine. For some reason BO single player sound doesn't work now, but I'll suss out why later. Multiplayer works fine, and miraculously all my other games seem to run fine now. Temp's are well within limits whilst gaming. And wow! BO is beautiful with a decent GPU.

Crisis averted. Phew. £230 is the most I've ever spent on a single component, and I'm relieved it doesn't seem to be at fault.

It seems I spoke too soon. TF2/Napoleon TW/BO all ran fine when I posted my last update but today is the first opportunity I've had to play and games and everything I try is crashing within seconds of the game loading screens coming up. There seem to be two common denominators - Steam and the 470.

Thats it. I'm completely out of idea's. Where do I go from here?

rsv gone!

Don't know what to suggest. PSU is usually the first port of call. That and drivers. Have you had a search around in the Steam forums?

Incidentally, I bought a pair of OC 1GB 460s to run in SLi. I was convinced they weren't both working and after much digging I found my X38 mobo supports Crossfire (ATI) but not SLi (nVidia). bks! Never simple, is it?

Have you checked that DirectX is working ok?

Start / Run / dxdiag

See if everything checks out ok?

Also - you can launch steam with the command line option of -dxlevel followed by a number which is the version you want to use.

Could also try that.

Get drivers from NVIDIA.com, not the card vendor.

Vendors tend to be a little slow updating to the latest version, its a new game so make sure you have the latest.

Not sure why but I decided to stop OC Guru (a Gigabyte app) from running in the background. Since I've been playing away on Black Ops quite happily.

To answer some of the points above (as I find it difficult to believe that the problem has gone entirely) I'm using the drivers from the nVidia website - I used driver sweep and reinstalled, which didn't affect it.

The PSU is often a candidate I agree, but it's a decent PSU from a respected brand and it is more than the minimum necessary for the GPU. It also has the right connectors for the GPU so no messing about with adapters.

DX is running fine, I tried updating recently and was told I have the most recent version. I'll keep in mind the -dxlevel command though, thanks.
