The Next Web is reporting that "All Internet porn “To be blocked” in the UK" by default to stop the poor children from seeing anything un-toward. In order to access sites someone deems as inappropriate (on any level), you're going to have to ask your ISP to remove the block:

http://thenextweb.com/uk/2010/12/19/all-internet-p...

Sounds very much like the UK Goverment are wanting to adopt the Australian filtering system (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_Australia) which blocks sites like anti-abortion (http://www.crikey.com.au/2009/01/23/so-conroys-internet-filter-wont-block-political-speech-eh/), racism etc.

I detest this idea. I detest it with a passion. Who determines what I, you or anyone else for that matter can think, look at or do? Who determines what my beliefs can be?

It sound funny and OTT to be thinking pessimistically, but I really fear that a filter to protect us from ourselves is not a good thing and will allow the people who control the lists endless possibilities for abuse!

If the article is true, we really need to start kicking up a fuss on this one before it is too late!

It was only a matter of time. We 'Britons' can't look after ourselves.

if its a case of easily unblocking it like changing google safe search to off i dont see the problem. if its complex and you have to write to the isp and state i'd like a shufty now then its rubbish.

That article is a load of crap.

The intention is for a system whereby parents can ask the ISP to block porn sites without them having to set up parental controls themselves. ie, it is an opt in system, not the default.

Not sure what the problem is .. You'll have to tick the box asking 'do you wish to access porn?' .. simples.

What fking moronic retarded piece of goat st though this up? Censorship at its worst, couched in something which on the face of it appears socially acceptable. Wonder what the next step will be ? Opt in to websites which do not support the current political party ?

I have been expecting this for some time and, as such, have quietly (well sometimes not so quietly) been stocking up on said productions. wink

I don't want to ask or tick any boxes - wish it stayed the way it stands at present

Exactly - this is how it should work. ISP by default should give you a 'safe' profile. If you wish to remove it, go to your ISP's homepage, pop your password in and unlock your full access.

The capability is already there, why this isn't done already I don't know.

It's only porn that's affected by this? I'm still able to get a healthy dose of beheadings, pics of dead celebs, etc I assume?
