Hi there folks,

I'm thinking about taking my kids (teens) up to Scotland for a weekend skiing. We are all total beginners. I live about 10 miles from Heathrow and could in reality take them from about 1600 on a Friday (after school) and be back on a Sunday night.

I've had a little look around courtesy of Google, but hope that PH can help me out ... I need to know where to go, where to stay and roughly how much for hire of everything/lessons

Any info would be great

a couple of sites for info
http://ski.visitscotland.com/
http://www.winterhighland.info/forum/list.php?2
All 5 centres are open, the winterhighland site gives plenty of punter view reports as to conditions & their forum takes questions from "Guests" .

Do the basic lessons at one of the indoor snow dome places before you spend any money on flights, car hire, hotels etc.

Ignore the haters, it's not too bad up here.

You really want to stay in aviemore or Perth.

Aviemore (10mins from cairngorms) is about 2.5 - 3 hrs from Edinburgh airport and is closest to a mini resort. Has hotels of all standards. Travell wise , arrive heathrow 5ish arrive Edinburgh 7.30, hire car and arrive aviemore 11-12pm. Slopes open 8.30ish, ski sat and sun if req'd leave slopes 3.30 catch 8ish flight home on sun night.

For glenshee stay in Perth, prob get to hotel by 9 on fri night, leave hotel 7.30-8.00am and on slopes by 9ish. It's about and hour from Perth to glenshee.

Travell time from airport to ski areas are about the same so one is long journey at start and end of break other is shorter to hotel but longer to slopes.

Stick a post up in Scotland section and you'll get plenty help as there are a few boarders and skiers in there.

Cheers

Ps hire is about 14-16 for a board or set of ski's Inc boots. you'll be able to hire suits aswell if you require, lessons are easy booked in advance using resort sites (easy links from skiscotland).

Adult day pass is about 28-30 but there is also beginner pass's and family pass's.

There are places for lunch dotted over slopes but can be really busy, not sure bout costs as being Scottish (tight) I always takea packed lunch for more time on the board

I would say jump on a plane if you are 10mins from airport.

1 run on a mountain will be like 100's of runs in snowdome without the stop/start every 5 minutes.
